lil bump
Did you try the freezer trick to pop off the old HS?

You have to take off the old HS before you put another one on top of it...you will get almost zero improvement by using it like that, and the reasons for that should be obvious. Pop the original heatsink off with a screwdriver and glue the new one onto the core of the card.

Man, I must have came across like a real bonehead, ofcourse I'm gonna take off the original, I was asking the best way to take it off? I.e., pry it with a screwdriver scares the hell out of me, but I guess I'll give it a shot if I don't get any better ideas.
edit:
I just sat it in the sun, and it came off very easy with just a lil pressure.

with my card i played unreal for about 20mins then shut down quickly and it wiggled off in my hand after a while.......also you could pout in the freezer in a plasteic bag and it should pop right off.....

Isn't a GF3Ti500 chip supposed to say Ti500 on it?

Should I lap the chip and/or the cooler?
I would just lap the heatsink. Lapping the chip is just too dangerous.

you can use some very high grit sandpaper 1000+ if you wanna lap the chip just a little
I would just lap the hs though

Just what kind of heatsink is that that you're trying to put on there?

you may want to take off the ramsinbks and put on thermaltake ramsinks, or just reapply them, you will see why whan you take them off

Lapping is using some sandpaper to remove the machine marks out of a heatsink.....when you finish you can get a mirror like finish out of the heatsink. This way you can get a better contact with the chip. Do a search over this forum and you can get lots of tips of how to lap a heatsink.
SOme guys had even lapped their chips with various results. If you are carefull you can get an even better contact between the cooling media and the chip, but if you are not.....well, lets just say you'll be considering doing a bussiness about doing keychains.
Lapping is making the bottom of your HS smooth so that it makes a better contact with the CPU die. To lap you need a peice of glass and several grits of sandpaper. You use the sandpaper on the glass so that you have a flat surface. Rub your HS back and forth. Start off with something like 800 grit paper then go 1000, 1200 and finish off at 1500. Your HS will be mirror smooth. Wash all the dust off and let dry. Mount your HSF with thermal paste and check out your new temps.....I dropped 3 C. YOu may get more or less depending on the condition of your HS before you lapped it.

is lapping dangerous? would it muck up me cpu if it was wrong as i know amds burn out in about a second... whereas p4's never burn out as they have this protection thingy.....
could you do it to a copper heatsink? or waterblock?
Lapping is only dangerious if you do a really bad job at it. Just keep your paper level and you'll be fine.

A hairdryer will help to remove a heatsink stuck on with tape.
BTW the heatsink will get hot to the touch :)
