I leave my computer to download sometimes overnight or during the day, i come back after an hour or two and find the internet connection dead. I check the router and it can't get an ip from the modem, i try to log into the modem and it doesn't responce, so i have to restart all of it. Now if i'm not downloading constantly and just use it for regular use the modem is fine for days, even months. I thought it was heat at first, so i put a fan on the modem, but same problem. I have the speedstream modem from SBC.
anyone have any ideas why this is happening, is it SBC or my modem? Can anyone recommend a good modem that i can buy that would work w/ sbc?
thanks

while im on cable, ive ad the same problem. i had battle with time warner for a few months switching them out till i got one that didnt crash. i still have a problem with my router crashing when im gettin too many connections open with torrents and the like, will switch to smoothwall whenever i get the hardware together. make sure its the modem crashing not the router, like next time you kill it plug directly into it and make sure your comp cant pull dhcp. when my router crashes. i have to power cycle it twice to get an ip form dhcp again, its really crappy but ive gotten used to it.

i think its just the modem, rare cases, it is the router and all i need to do is restart my connection from my computer and it works, but when the modem goes out, the internet light actually goes out.
did you just switch same model modems until u got one that worked fine or did you switch brands?
thanks for the help

I have an sbc dsl modem and has the same issues. The solution is actually really easy, i am using my router as the pppoe device and the modem is just a passthru. The modem doesnt really do anything. Before i changed it the modem would freeze every 12 hours, and since i added the router, i havent had one pronlem in 4 months. Give it a shot.

I used to have disconnection problems exactly as you're describing when running emule or azureus. Whenever it happened, I had to cycle power to the router and cable modem to get it going again. Eventually, I found out that it was my router not being able to handle all the outgoing connections. I haven't had any problems since I bought my Linksys WRT54G.

i switched the pppoe to the router, i'll put it to the test tonight. as for the router, i have a linksys wireless dualband router already, would it really differ from the WRT54G? I'm also going to try limiting the amount of connections on azureus to see if that helps.
thanks again guys
