Well, to reduce the amount of time Windows spends resizing your cache, setting it to a permanant size works good. What you'll need to do is to open up System Monitor, and tell it to monitor your swapfile in use. Then open everything that you would normaly run at the same time, and a few other things (just in case). Read how many MB of swap file you are using, and then add an extra 100MB. Go into the virtual memory settings (I dunno about in ME, but in 98, it's under your system propterties in the performance tab), and tell windows that you want to manage the swap file. Set both the minimum and maximum values to the number of MB you calculated earlier. Click OK a few times, and your swap file should be optimized.

Setting your own virtual memory settings is an old tip from the Win95 days. Today you are better off letting Windows manage your memory as the newer versions of Windows do a much better job of it than old Win 95 did.

There are lots of plug in freeware apps for memory optimization. I don't like then as it seems they cause as many problems as they fix. Reset your memory to let Windows manage it an you should be OK. WinME is a lame OS to start with....You should look at upgrading.

here, but me should have o prob with upto 512, its after 512 that there is a hint of a prob

Open up the System.ini file in a text editor, such as NotePad.
Find the line about Vcache.
Modify the number next to MaxFileCache to 512MB (524,288KB) or less (you can add the line if it's not there). For example:
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=524288

hope this helps,, oh yea vir memory should be hadled by win me, default should be 1.5 phyysical, you could try setting it yourself or making both perm the same, which would force swap/ram just to see

Well I was just about to suggest you get MaxMem, Here. (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/maxmem.htm) But it seems like you've worked out your problem. Haven't tried XP yet though. I'm gonna wait a few months till all the bugs start comming out and are fixed.

Get cacheman, i use it and out of my 512 megs, no matter how much stuff I have open or how long I have been doing, I never go below 340 megs free. I think I may have dropped to 270 or so once, but I can't remember.

Would it also be a good idea to defragment the drive first, so that the swapfile will not be fragmented??

Yep. Although, in my experience, windows doesn't give an error message, when the free ram is low, it just sits there, until some is freed up - or freezes. Low memory errors are usually caused by problems in the 1st 640kb used by the underlying DOS.
