Man this guy is good. I have been a fan ever since he created softmodding for 9500's.

This is a SS from Sampsa with revised version ATI Tool Beta. Notice these X1800XT clocks (2d only)

I hope I can get in touch with W1zzard tomorrow so I can see what this X1800XL can really do.

so maybe that dry ice oc by Maki really did promise good things for the 1X800 series, like a whole load of people commented (and then got flamed).

Damn, that's the most amazing clock I've ever seen.... ATI really did a good job with this one. Imagine 2 of them at those clocks on crossfire... Too bad they didn't include any benchmark scores, assuming it doesn't lock up.

LN2

It doesn't look benchable at all, but 940 core benchable and close to 1Ghz memory is just nuts. Who needs pipelines when you have these clockspeeds ;)

It's ashame like 95 percent of us will never achieve anything near clocks like that.

HousERaT
10-18-05, 06:08 PM
I guess that's why Sampsa does his business with XtremeSystems.com. It's assumed his clocks are gonna be with highend cooling even though he'll mess around with stock for a minute or two.

Doesn't it use the same mounting holes as every ATi since the 8500? And if so, don't you have something with a little more kick? ;)

El<(')>Maxi

Actually ATI has gone to a four hole mounting. I'm sure I can mod the Pelt to fit, and making a new mounting plate for the tube is even easier. Just tonight will be air only ;)

Well I wish I had something good to post. I loaded the beta and right off noticed I could not set memory clocks. Clicking 'Set Clock' changed it for a moment then it reverted right back to default.

I thought that Control Center might be interferring somehow so I uninstalled it but during uninstallation the screen went mad. I did a hard boot thinking it was nothing. Tried setting memory clocks again with same result. Core was adjustable but the screen freaked again. I tried a few more boots without even running any card utility and the screen still went whacko after a few minutes in Windows like this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/canny/_FS345.jpg

I really think this card was defective from the get go with the flickering and black screening and its nothing to do with ATI Tool. Still it's not clear why ATI Tool had no joy with memory clocks. It might be that the card Sampsa has is an unlocked ES or something, just a guess. We need to see if other retail cards will have this same problem.

DAMN! Thats one amazing overclock. Sorry to hear about your card maxxi, I hope this isnt to common with the new cards, I was thinking about selling my GTX when the XT comes out. Its still set for Nov. 11th right??

Were you setting the core or the mem? From what Ive heard, the memory on the XL is basically damn near maxxed out at stock. If so, then......Idk, best of luck man...

El<(')>Maxi
10-19-05, 12:10 AM
I was thinking my very high rails might have been causing this with the cards onboard vcontrols so I tried closer to stock. LOL, havn't done that for a while, still no good.

Shadow,

The XL uses 1.4ns ram rated at 700Mhz so it's no where near maxed at 500Mhz. When I OC'd the card the other nite I went from 500/500 stock straight to 575/550 in one click with no problems. A couple of other XL's are running 700Mhz memory already on ATI's unreleased Winclk.

Ross
10-19-05, 12:15 AM
It's a weak substitute, but using the PCI-e speed (Auto->Slow->Normal->Faster->Fastest or something like that) under Advanced->Chipset will alter the card clocks. It won't be huge, but it would at least be something to play with until the beta gets straightened out.

Have you tried ATI Winclock?

speed bump
10-19-05, 12:21 AM
Ross no one who isn't conected can get that.

Maxi I wonder if ATI has some kind of lock on the memory to keep people from running up there XLs to XT speeds? Also I wonder if the difference between the core IDs keeps ATItool from running on the XL.

Ross
10-19-05, 12:46 AM

Yeah, I came across some versions of it, but they appear to be quite old (v1.08 from like '03) and good for the 7000-8500 Radeons only :(

No. The 1800 uses the 2.10" square 4 holes pattern like NV uses.

I can tell you that it is not a bad card. One of the partners has sent me two of there first cards and the same thing happened with both of them, flickering and black screening. It happened on an nVidia AND ATi chipset. Right now I am in a holding pattern for some new beta drivers.

Rage Fury anyone?

El<(')>Maxi
10-20-05, 03:47 AM
It appears that you are right about the card. I just did some further testing on another fresh install and it's fine. I got another beta driver version and ATI Tool is working but still does not seem to be playing nice with Control Center or the driver. I won't go into the details other than voltage control works as well as core clock control.

The good news is this card appears to have some real power for the given clocks. 615/549 = 300Fps in Nature '01 :D

If Memory clocks were adjustable it certainly would be alot more interesting.

Ross
10-20-05, 04:50 AM
Wow. If I see ~195FPS @ 360FSB on my OCed x700 I am excited ;) Maxi, did you ever run PF?

I messed around with some vid card BIOS stuff today for my x700 Pro and I noticed that it only worked after flashes if I had NOTHING ATI-related installed before I reinstalled drivers...that included ATI Tray Tools. I uninstalled the card via Device Manager, uninstalled the driver and ATI OC utils via Add/Remove, rebooted in Safe Mode, ran Cat uninstaller, rebooted normally, cancelled auto hardware install and manually ran the ATI driver install program.

I probably could've gone one step further and done a drive search for any files with "ati" in safe mode too, but it worked anyway. I don't know what your idea of a "fresh install" is, but maybe you have some remnants of old drivers hanging around causing trouble. I really never had any problems before just uninstalling and installing new drivers without all the excess, but apparently there "can" be issues like people say ;) You might want to go through the trouble of weeding out anything ATI related before installing the new driver. Of course, it could just be the BIOS and drivers are so new and/or beta ;)

El<(')>Maxi
10-20-05, 05:16 AM
Ya I know about driver problems and how to deal with them. It gets a bit more complicated on this bench rig because pull down takes about 20 minutes :D
With the screen corruption I didn't even have enough time in Windows to do an uninstall before it whacked out on me, but it definately is a software/driver problem. The card is fine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/canny/897cee18.jpg

Check out Nature & DH at these clocks. A couple of the other tests are slower on this new gen but the gains are worth it. Imagine what this would do if I could change the memory clocks. I really think the cards Sampsa & macci have are unlocked somehow.

Lol, glad to know that it works, I have two 9800pros, apg, that look just like that^^ except a lot more messed up kinda.... Did you have a box in the middle of the screen that if you moved the mouse it would move? so would make it your pointer? (not trying to thread jack)

Straight from the man himself, so I ordered a Zalman VF700 Fatal1ty for my X1800XL. I'm not all into the fatal1ty name sutf but the cooler comes with a 33% faster fan and is painted with thermally conductive paint.
