Is it possible to upgrade from one of the upper tier g3's to one of the lower tier G4's with just the cpu upgrade ? from like a 400mhz G3 powermake to a 500mhz G4 or something

I dont think so.
The CPUs are built into the mobo, and Apple calls them "logic boards".
This makes it harder to upgrade stuff.

ok becaue i've seen just cpu and logic boards for sale, but if its impossible then damn.

There are apples whoose cpus you can upgrade. Many are socketed or slotted, however you will have to do research on your specific bord/cpu.

never mind i got a good deal on an apple.
i'm trading a 350mhz IBM PL and 40 dollars for a 350mhz G4-- is there any upgrade capability here ?
