i know the general rule of thumb for memory is that looser timings = higher clocks.
which would be the best combination for vid card ram though? apparently my x800pro was the runt of the batch, as the maximum i could ever run 3dmark or am3 at was 555/555 with an arctic silencer and no mods; would i gain anything by loosening timings and bumping the mem speed more?
it didnt even seem that raising the clocks BECAME unstable after 555/555, just as soon as i hit 556 or higher it would lock up, even though the temps were reasonable.
im currently running 544.5/544.5, 35C idle
Speeds like yours are in the grey area. Generally, I believe that if your memory isn't running within 20MHz of your GPU speed, it is beneficial to loosen the latency to increase the speed, and reduce the bandwidth bottleneck. In your case it could either help or hurt, hard to say, and you'll probably need to try it out manually. Start by increasing the TRP to 6, and see what MHz gains you get, and if you get any gains in 3D performance. There are other parameters that you might be able to tighten to offset the latency increase.

I have been only been looking into the opposite direction in the past - after having played with a 7800GTX and some of Gautams comments I think it might be worth looking into.
My experience had been that TIGHTENING a bunch of the stock timings were worth about 30mhz -45mhz in clock speed on the memory - but after seeing the same Samsung GC16 running 850mhz on a NVidia GTX loose like a 93 year old... vs in various ATI flavors, tight like a 18 year old..., made me wonder how much LOOSENING cold bring you down the road.. I am interested myself now

...wow...worst metaphors ever! :p
I get what you mean though, was thinking about fiddling around with RAM timings. I think it's just trial and error, just like it is with OCing system memory. Only instead of SuperPI 32M you use 3DMark05 lol.
