View Full Version : Is this okay? (Pics of tube-kink)

I am currently in the process of cutting the hose to between my CPU block and VGA block. I cut a nice piece, not too long, and fitted it onto the blocks.
There is a slight kink on the tubing between the two blocks. As this is my first wc build, I am unsure if this restricts flow a lot, or if it is OK.
Please take a look at these pics and tell me what you think:

(I could make it slightly longer, but I don't want to unless it is very necessary)
Thanks!

that will definately have an affect on flow, how much im not sure. maybe you could try the wrap thingies. you might be able to increse the radius if you can turn the block around on the cpu, im not sure exactly how those mount, im pretty sure its nice and centered tho. the wider the radius, the less the kinkage. or you could use the wrap stuff that is sold, i cant even remember the makers name tho, i think its swiftech cool wraps or somethin like that, but im likely wrong.

If you can I would extend it. But thats because I'm picky about things like that. It will work fine how it is.
I've got kinks much worse than that in my system. It will cut back the flow, but not enough to affect more than a degree or two.
Turn Your Cpu Strom block 180 degrees then you will more gentle angle

I just put a worm-ride hose clamp on the kinked part of the tubing and tighten it till it goes away. May need two.
I would address that whichever way you can. Bends are bad for flowrate, and kinked bends are going to be worse.
is that 1/16" or 1/8" walled tubing... if its 1/16" walled, PLEASE go pick up some 1/8" walled tubing with a better bend radius - mcmaster sells masterkleer 1/2" ID x 3/4" OD for madd cheap, it has a great bend radius, and it NEVER STAINS

Thanks for the input guys. I cut a new piece of hose, a little more than an inch longer than this one. It will fit OK, but I cant have it much longer. If it still kinks, I'll either rotate the STORM or bud worm clamps/cable ties on the kink. I would prefer to do neither though.
By the way, it is MASTERKLEER GENERAL PURPOSE CLEAR PVC TUBING, 7/16" ID, 5/8" OD, 3/32" WALL THICKNESS tubing from McMasterCarr and 1/2" nipples.

I've had "kinks" like that B4, I just put a hose clamp directly on the kink, to un-kink it.

Instead of worm clamp, try tie-wraps. Cheaper and you could make it a bit decorative by spacing them every few mm or so. Use fluorescent cables if you have UV light.

can you show us pics of the rest of your case

Not familar with the STORM block as I don't have one, but I think you would want your outlet barb above your inlet bard so that you won't get a possible air pocket at the top of the block. This should also help in removing the kink in your tubing since now you have to use longer tubing at a gentler curve.

the motherboard is mounted upside down in the case. the orientation is actually the way you think it should be.

Ahh.. ok :) I just took a second look at the pic. Didn't notice he had one of those Lian Li cases.

Do a search for a very nice product called Coolsleeves
Linky to pwnt by pats dualie system with Coolsleeves (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=419348)
It comes for 5/8"OD tubing and should do the trick for you easily.
-just another option, not saying the earlier suggestions werent good too ;)

coolsleeves is the product i mentioned in which i couldnt remember its name. those seem to work well for that purpose (all they do is squeeze it like the hos clamp sugestion)

The problem with it is that it may be a very small kink now...but later it could be much worse. I have a kink in my loop going from my video card down to my pump...it took it like a week to kink after the system had been up, although I didn't notice any temperature differences...but just note that it can get worse...and it's probably better to fix/prevent it now than later.

You could use some 90 or 45 elbows, but proably will affect water flow. Be careful they was you put those tubes it looks as though it could put stress on you card/block. Very clean job so far.

Can someone point out to me what the kink looks like? hehe i dont know what a kink is XD. thanks.

Have you ever bent a hose so the water couldn't come out? The part where it's bent is the kink. In the pic, if you look a little to the left of the case fan, you can see where the tube seems to flatten out, which is where the kink is.

Yo fellas. Thanks for all help. After I cut a new tube length, it actually started kinking after about 5 hours. So I had to cut another piece of tubing, even longer than the last one, and I turned the STORM upside down. Now the STORM is mounted the way its supposed to be.
I am test-running the system now. Here are some pics:

So the kink hasn't come back yet?
BTW, I know it was mentioned before, but that blue dye looks sweet :)

Advice,,,, pump out-cpu in-gpu in-res-rad-pump in
less tubing, better flow

IYIENACE, thanks for the tip. I didn't really realize that I actually do have a lot of tubing until you guys mentioned it.
The reason I went with this setup is because I was always taught that the pump should have a clean intake directly from the res in order to maximize pressure out from the pump.
When I look at it now, I see that IYIENACE's suggestion actually could work pretty well here without me having to move any of the parts. Maybe, when I install a 2nd graphics card or whatever, I can try another setup.
That said tho, I am getting very sweet temps with this setup. Ive only installed Windows, drivers etc. so far so no major load testing has been done, but my idle temps are CPU 29C and GPU 33C.
