activation numbers

im formatting a pc for someone, when i went to install XP SP1 on his computer i put in the license key but its tellin gme ive entered the key wrong, ive checked it over ten times now and its not me!

with XP SP2, the cd means nothing, you can install as many computers with the one CD as long as you have different keys for each computer.

are SP1 CDs key specific? any one got a number i can call M$ in the uk to talk to them about this? i have a legal valid key but it wont work!

Uh, ignoring volume liscensing keys, all the Windows XP CDs are key-specific--they have particular keys assigned to them. Microsoft should have a number for your country-specific inquiries on its local website (www.microsoft.co.uk, perhaps?) that you can call to get the official "Well it must be a pirated copy" line.

If you start the "XP Activation" it will give you the phone number you need.

I don't think he can actually get there, since I believe he's referring to his CD key, and not the six-by-nine activation number sequence.

O I got it now, he cant get past the install.

Why dont you just call them at the UK activation centre - 0800 018 8354 and 0870 2411963.
