I cant install folding at home on one of my comps! :(
I get an error message saying something about a problem with "iKernel x0000" (its something like that). The specs of the 'problem computer' are:
P3 500mhz /128 PC100 sdram/40 gig HD / Windows 98 first edition
I just reformatted and reinstalled windows on it and still no luck. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS WITH TRYING TO INSTALL SETI. Does anybody know whats going on with this infernal machine??? I'm folding happily on my win2k comp.
EDIT: Its the console version. I tried the text version, it sits there and does nothing.
hmmm. in internet explorer try going to tools--->windows update
update everything and then try again.

Thx 4 the quick reply, ill do that asap.
*EDIT* Ok, updated the crap outta widows, but no go....
I got the exact error message:
"Error installing iKernel.exe: [0x10000]"
same thing w/ seti too, its really really weird.

Did it try to do anything? Like connect to the servers and get work? If so then that may be the version that you need to use.
The text version is not an installer. It's the actual program, but it needs to be copied and pasted into it's own directory. Also, it needs to be started, answer the questions that it asks and let it screw around for a secong, then stopped, then delete the work that it put in the "work" folder, then restart it. This is so that you get an ID number and it makes sure that the number is properly assigned to the work that you download so that you get credit for it.
If it grabs the work and then sits there and does nothing then let it sit there and do nothing for roughly an half hour and see if itsays something like
Finished a Frame (1)
Finished a Frame (2) and so on.
Depending on the protein it could take a very long time for a PIII 500 to show the first frame being completed.

Well, the text version (now) says alot of stuff, it downloads some files and scolls through alot of text, but then it just shows credits (copyright info/designers' names). And stops there, so i closed it, deleted the files in work (except for 2 of them, it wouldnt let me so i figured they didnt need to be deleted?). Then i started it back up again, and, again it sits at the copyright info. However, it didnt ask for username/etc again... its now been like that for about 5 min, ill leave her for another half hour or so... Ill post with what happens.

"Finished a frame <1>"
Yeah!!! :) So does that mean that all is well?
Too bad it cant run the graphical version... its just insane.
with the text version, (2.0), can you just shutdown the program anytime and it will pick up where it left off like the console?
That sounds about right. The last thing it shows before processing frames is Vijay Pande and Michael Shirts or something. Here's a pic. It just takes a very long time to process frames on some of the proteins.
Here's a pic of one that I shut down and restarted. Normally the first frame is 1 but this one started in the middle and they aren't advancing very quickly at all.

Thx Ploaf - this comp is gonna be folding almost 24/7 now. :)
Looks like i"m a little slow. ;) Yup. I think you've got it. :D
To shut down the text version you need to use CTRL-C to reduce the risk of it screwing up the work unit. Sometimes it will kill a work unit or start over at the beginning if something goes wrong when it's closed.
