Bizzare problem with MS word (office xp)

Out of no where, i'm suddenly unable to highlight a sentence in word and use the backspace to delete it. I either have to highlight and use the delete key, or not highlight the line, and just backspace it letter by letter.

Can someone tell me whats going on? its very annoying since i'm working on several essays.
