I Just got a cable modme at 1.5mbs, faaaaast.
anyways i got like 5 different computers i wanna use with it, i wont be using them all at once thoug so it wont bottleneck. I got an 8-port hub with an uplink port. What exactly is this uplink port? i heard i can plug the cable modem into it and share a connection like that. i know i can just use a router but i'd rather keep the money for the plunging prices of ram right now. My question is what can i do with that "uplink port" and can i run my cable through it?

Uplink port is the one where you plug in your Cable Modem. Its the port where you plug your Internet source, so the computers on the other ports can access it.

well that usually u should use a router when u have more than 2 computer networked together and sharing the same ip. In a router u usually need to go into the bios and setup some stuff( host name, domain name, etc). But if u only use only ONE computer at a time, it should be ok to use just a hub or switch. With these everything should be automatically configured. All u gotta do is setup your computer. :D

Keep in mind (as I remember anyways) to use the uplink port with a cable modem you have to use a crossover cable rather than a straight through, your service provider should provide all your IPS etc as long as you have TCP/IP configured over your lan adaptors, keep in mind this is far from a secure method of connecting and that most cable companys dont take kindly to seeing a bunch of IPs and MAC addresses at the other end...

the uplink port on the hub is where you put the cable from the modem if you have paid for more then one IP addresses. If you havent then you would plug the cable from your router unless your router has ports of it's own. If you use a server then it would go in any other port.

If you buy extra IP's or you have a router in front of it no.
