n17's dothan has the same gcpuid screen as mine.

http://n17ikh.com/images/gcpuid.PNG

all the fields are the same on mine, accept for my multi is at 17x, because its not stable at 18.

his gcpuid reads to be at 1.340 volts at 2.4, which is my 'max' voltage ( i cant find a way to up it any more than that, although i have a feeling another 1/10 volts would do it )

anyways.
With gcpuid reading them as the same revision, would that mean they are the same string?

thats mine, and yes, its the ebay pic. would his be the same #'s up top? im seeing some on ebay that start with a Q instead of a 7, im wondering if thats the reason why this wont be stable at 18x.

on a side note, i can drop my vcore to something like 1.292 before 17x prime errors, where 18x is instant on 1.340.

n17 is stable 24hrs at 18x on 1.340.
he wont agree to get pics of the processor or drop the vcore for me, though... so im kind of at a loss as to why he can do it and i can not.
We have the same laptop, with the same amount of ram (although im dual channel, he is not)

at this point im looking for ideas as to WHY two chips from the same family wouldnt perform the same.

There's no gaurantees with OC'ing. Certain runs of CPU's will hold a certain voltage, and others will not. Even though they have the same code, that doesn't mean they came from the same batch. Every one is a little different.

and even if they were from the same batch, even side by side on the same wafer, its no guarantee that they will perform the same.

so basically i have to go out and drop $160- $200 on a new chip until i find one that can do this. eek.

be watching the classys for dothans if you need em.

Dothan's are the most irritatingly inconsistant processors I've ever owned in my life. I have been through four of them, and honestly not a single one has lived up to my expectations. One of them broke 2.7, one did 2.45, one did 2.55 and one did 2.65... I spent hours trying to find patterns between batch codes and dates and found nothing. There are no patterns, and the deviation is greater than any other modern proc in existence. It's playing the lotto every time you buy one of these, and because of this, I'm toying with the idea of giving up on the odds and just getting a 780...those seem to be the only consistent clocking Dothans out there, but you got to pay.

well im kinda inable to afford one of those. suppose i could sell all three of my current dothans and get a fast one, im hoping my new 1.8 will do 2.4 solid, but if its not ive got 2 for sale and then ill be looking for another i guess.

is there any chance its actually the laptop, and not the chips?

only way to find out would be to build a desktip dothan systems and try them out...

keep in mind, it IS a laptop...not really the ideal OC bed.

Reminds me of my 2.4C that wouldnt do 3ghz without massive voltage. The trick is to pray before your chip ships. Lots of praying ;)

bah, it shipped the other day.
should be here tomorrow.

ill take down what i can between my dothans, maybe guatam has enough that between us we could figure something out.

Good luck. Let me know what you find.
