View Full Version : Another Halloween Mod?

ghettocomp

Just for giggles, I want to see if there would be enough interest out there
to see me do a mod on a real pumpkin. I mean install a fully operational
computer inside one of those things... :D This would be something similar to
the 90-minute mod I did a while back.

Reid
10-30-05, 09:33 AM
Are you serious!? A operational pc inside of a living pumkin that would be ****ing awesome I think, I'm going to stick around on this thread and see how this turns out.

Are you going to cut a design in the front of it, so it looks like a real pumpkin?
:p

Cap'n Pedro

Go for it! Oh, and try and get a sound reactive cold cathode and some halloween music (maybe some Michael Jackson :P). Spooooooky!

squasher
10-30-05, 10:58 AM
That sounds good, how will you deal with the pumpkin being wet on the inside?

Dukeman

It's been done (http://www3.uark.edu/bkst/pumpkin/)...but it could be done better and who better than ghettocomp!

It's been done (http://www3.uark.edu/bkst/pumpkin/)...but it could be done better and who better than ghettocomp!
And I thought I had it made :-/
Oh well, I think my finished product will look better!

I saw I had a couple of replies! A couple more and
I may actually get started on this today!

Anyway, I have the Victim.
Either way; I eat this thing (Pie, Bread etc) or I make a computer out of it for
a little while. no matter what, this is going to be fun. :D
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin1.jpg

I saw an Idea to use CCD lighting, Cool! I only have that
in blue, well :-/ It'll do...
I also have a good Cheap PSU, this one is used, considering
where it will be stuffed, I won't use a new one.
Motherboard/CPU will be the VIA Mini-FLex ATX W/800Mhz VIA
Processor, Same kind used in my 90-minute mod box.
Now to find the Hard Drive, CD rom, and the few additional things
to keep it running.

ghettocomp
10-30-05, 12:51 PM
If things can go wrong, They will. I seem to be having a little
trouble with the ISP again today. Seems I have to reboot the
Cable modem every 5-15 minutes. This is getting old. I actually
may switch providers just to stay online.

Dukeman
10-30-05, 01:30 PM
I think you should do it as there have got to be better ways to do the mod that look better and have better technical effort. Besides, most of our systems are haunted by Windows anyway, why not use a more fitting case?

Dukeman
10-30-05, 01:31 PM
Now if you lit with a real candle... :D

Reid
10-30-05, 01:40 PM
A real candle, lol. Just get some of those tall fake candles. haha
Anyways I can't wait to see this, where do you think your going to mount this stuff? or are you just going to stuff it in there?
power supply is going into the pumpkin or staying outside with a little hole for all the wires?

Viper2004
10-30-05, 02:35 PM
Why not make something that resembles a pumpkin so you don't have to deal with the nasty pumpkin insides?

Just an idea...

overclucker
10-30-05, 06:25 PM
i wouldnt suggest it, when it starts roting its gonna ooze and short out the stuff inside

ghettocomp
10-30-05, 07:34 PM
No worries of rot, the compy will be assembled for Halloween only, and run just for the day. :D Just wanted something different. Beside that I might just carve it up afterwards and make Pie anyway. Gotta Luv Punkin Pie!

On another note; Nearly have everything set to build, still cant find a suitable extra CDRom...and I Aint gonna buy one! LOL! I'M planning on starting in the Early AM tomorrow and try to finish the whole thing by noonish.

ghettocomp
10-30-05, 07:59 PM
Maybe its just me, I think the Cable modem is crapping out on me. I have tried to Edit once the post above, and to post elsewhere twice. Lost connection each time.
Meh. it is winter and I lose Airconditioning to my server closet for the next 8-9 months
Probably have to water cool those rigs...

Tat2monsta
10-30-05, 08:17 PM
b4 you put anyting inside it.. fiberglass resin!! hehe brainwave... that would make it solid and it wouldnt rot.. well even if it did. eveything would be protected as it will be rotting inside the resin

Sweet, while at work Ghetto will be modding a pumpkin. Can't wait to see how it all turns out...

Only wish I had time to Mod pumpkins, heck time to mod my computer would be great. I'll be checking back every now and then waiting on pics! (bah, like I really need to do work while at work)

Not at work, I just escaped.... Ummm, I mean I just got off work. 11 hard
hours staring at the computers. :D

Looks like I pretty much have most of what I need for this project:
Fans for cooling (and Moisture removal), Hard Drive, Motherboard, PSU, & STUFF!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin3.jpg
OH Mann.... I think I hurt it, It threw up  LoL!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin4.jpg
Way big enough for the motherboard! Now All I need is a pattern for the
carving and develop some way to properly mount the motherboard away from the moist sides.

i cant wait to see this done..

i didnt get anything done today really big for halloween for modding.. i sparyed the side of my case orange.. or i could.. hehe

looks like alot of stuff to fit in there too.. its gona be a mouth full.. maybe a larger case...

Reid
10-31-05, 10:38 AM
Well ghetto like I promised I'd check back today while I was at school and well... I'm at school, :bang head: It's 11:40 almost and I get off at 2:32.

I can't see any of the pictures or anything so I'll have to check back when I get home and either post another or just edit this one.

ghettocomp
10-31-05, 10:47 AM
I was just going to use this painted foam core board, but it was just too
much work to make it all fit right inside.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin7.jpg

Then I got this great idea! Plastic Bags. I figure I could place the motherboard inside this freezer bag and all the pumpkin moisture will
be no more a bother...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin6.jpg

This Idea works good!. Now I have to get the Fans, PSU and Hard Drive
inside as well. looks like I may need that poster board anyway, if only to
mount the hard drive on.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin9.jpg

The Fans are a couple of those excess hard drive cooler fans I have.
these are more than able to keep the wind inside this pumpkin.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin8.jpg

I was planning on using my shape shifting lights inside, but there is not enough
room left. Besides, those are for my other mod in the works..

Actually I was meaning that while I was at work, you'd be modding pumpkins. Glad you are off work tho so we can enjoy the pumpkin carnage.

I have a feeling this will be pure ghetto! (hope it involves duct tape, everything is more ghetto with duct tape)

You're putting the mobo in a plastic bag?! What about issues of heat? Won't it get hot inside there?

< subscribed... this looks neat >

Dukeman
10-31-05, 11:12 AM
WOW ghetto! I think you have stumbled on to the most ghetto case ever...The Zip Lock Baggie Case. It's clear, flexible and its definitly not a cube. I think this is cooler than the fact you are about to shove it into a pumpkin.

This motherboard has heat issues alright, but they are easy to tangle with, fans will be keeping the bag inflated and forcing air out through carefully placed holes. should be ok to do.

The pattern again

taped to the pumpkin.

the funnies part is yet to come!

ghettocomp
10-31-05, 12:49 PM
After tracing the pattern onto the pumpkin, I cut along the edges to give
it a cleaner appearance when I am done.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin13.jpg

the Skin needed to be cut away to see everything properly, a lot of work... And yes, that is a binder clip being used. Those
things are good for a lot more than holding paper.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin14.jpg

Now for the fun, DREMEL TIME!! actually does a good clean cut

10-31-05, 01:57 PM
LOL @ the paper clip. I mean, no one else would have ever thought about using that for something as complicated as skinning a pumpkin. Great work ghettocomp. Umm.. about the ziplock baggie, maybe you should use like a big clear GARBAGE bag or a black one... I mean that would keep all the parts away from the moisture.

You should hurry up and put it outside with a little pumpkin on a monitor or something and playing scarry holloween music to scare the kids.... or not, just an idea haha.
Maybe have it pass out candy?

Keep up the good work, can't wait till this is done!!!!

-Reid

You could put on a scary movie to scare the kids, like the Mike Myers movies... what were they called "Halloween" something?

I never get any sleep. I have to stop playing with my video cards!

ghettocomp
11-01-05, 09:32 AM
Well Yesterday was fun. would have been more so I i didn't have to work
and try to finish this in a hurry. :D
First pic here is of the cooling assembly. I used some scotch tape to hold
the fans onto the foam board box. One fan was to push air in, the other
would suck it all out. then the PSU would draw the extra hot air out of the pumpkin entirely (I hope)
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin20.jpg

The CCD light that would give the pumpkin its glow was fastened to the other
side to the motherboard pocket. this is on the same side as the carved image.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin21.jpg

This picture shows everything is attached and packaged up in the plastic bag.
I later found out that I would have to remove the Motherboard from this pocket
then insert everything else. when the pocket was seated good, then I would attach
everything to the motherboard and carefully slide it back down into the
pumpkin. Otherwise it would not fit at all.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin22.jpg
The Hard drive would be the absoolute last thing that is put into the pumpkin. I am not sure where the picture is of that, but it was quite a tight fit inside!

ghettocomp
11-01-05, 09:42 AM
A first test of the light, and.... THis LooKS COOl!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin32.jpg

Because the pumpkin was not that big, I opted to have the PSU hang out the back a little. Not too bad. Off to the side I had to make a quickie hole to pass the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse & LAN cables. works for me.. :D
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin33.jpg

All powered up and running (windows 98, already had a Hard Drive loaded with it)
great fun. Left it folding all night while I was at work. :( those mobo/CPU combos
do not work very well for folding. but they are really good for this kind of project :)
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin34.jpg
I probably should have chosen a different picture. This one looks
more like a crab to me.

ghettocomp
11-01-05, 09:47 AM
Well, that was fun, If I had more time, I would have found a way to have the pumpkin sitting on a platform of some kind. That way I would not have had to stick an old chunk of the gourd up under the front to hold it more upright.

Eat your hearts out ]H[! I think this one looks better! Just too bad I didn't have the CD installed too, This one would have been absolutely perfect!

g0dM@n

ghettocomp
11-01-05, 10:04 AM
If I stick the CD Drive in, then the light for the carving would be completely blocked or would have been uneven, like a big blue stripe down the middle. It would have been cool to have the drive push the top up to load in a CD!

Seems this High Tech Gourd wont last long. It is starting to dry out and shrink (A LOT!) it is going to be difficult to get the mobo out without cutting.

Thought I would add a couple of posts on the fate of that Pumpkin, I could not let it go to complete waste so it was further modded into another use...

Really, Not wanting it to go to waste, I hacked it into a bunch of smaller parts with each piece around the size of my hand:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin50.jpg

then I removed the skins, after which I baked in an oven until it was
very soft and mushy. I usually leave the skin on, but was in a hurry to
finish this project:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin51.jpg

The baked pumpkin was left to cool, then I ground it up in a blender until
it was smooth with no lumps, a few extra things were added like the eggs, milk and spices...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma6/Pumpkin/Pumpkin52.jpg

after which it was whipped into a smooth mixture...
