I'm trying to install the VGA drivers (catalyst) and am getting an error telling me to install the 'standard windows vga driver' first. How do I find this / install it?
Thanks.

try device manager, and telling the card to go to update driver.
is this a fresh install of Windows? or did you have a video card/driver previously installed?

I have had this happen to be before, it was when I uninstalled my Cat. drivers and tested out what would happen if I tried to install new drivers without a reboot. Rebooting fixed it.

I'm experienceing this problem right now with my X1800XL, I cannot install the latest drivers from ATI. I get an INF file not found error, then it tells me to install a standard video driver first or something. Now I can install the 5.9 cats that came with my card on CD perfectly fine.
I've tried safe mode, DriverCleaner Pro, everything. Now the disk that came with my card has the 5.9 cats and it installs perfectly.

Yeah, I can't download the 5.10s though, do you have any problems with viewing videos etc?

No problems with video, I do have 5.9 cats installed because they came on a CD with my card. I only experience the Standard driver problem when trying to install the 5.10s. I actually just watched a DVD, and the AVIVO makes all the difference. I'm anticipating ATI resolving this issue. I cannot even contact ATI tech support because I can't register my card because they have not updated their registration webpage.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your chipset drivers, then installing the catalysts. I had a problem with a borked driver install... and windows could not detect my PCI and AGP Bus. Without that, Windows couldn't see my video card.
