can anyone recommend a sound card for about 30 bucks that would be better than the onboard? i was thinking about the creative Live! 24 bit card.

Yes, I second that. It's really quite a good card for the money.

I agree with the ones listed above. Anything that uses VIA's Envy chipset should be very good

The going price is something like $28 shipped on the Egg. If you're doing music listening with phones or a 2.1 system, the 710 is the way to go.

If playing games is your thing...you could get bye with the SB Live! 24-bit...those usually run $25 to $30. If you usually listen to music or watch movies, then the AV-710 should be better than the former.

oh.. hmm.. i usually game but i listen to music while doing so but i don't want to compromise the game sound... will it be better than the onboard sound that i have on my motherboard now? what about in my future rig?

also keep in mind that mic in and line in are disabled in the hi-sample rate mode for the Chaintech AV-710, the hi-sample rate mode is the only setting where the sound is worth using

so if you talk in games, get the SB Live! 24-bit, and make sure it's the 24-bit, it's really an Audigy LS chip which is better than the original SB Live! chips

in games the SB Live! 24-bit is better, in sound quality the Chaintech AV-710 is better

the AV-710 is a good card. I have been using one for gaming / music while I wait for my mystique gold. I have not been dissapointed with the in game audio, and have been quite impressed with the sound quality for music / dvd playback. IMO it's a nice well rounded card for the price. I have not had the experience of using the newer SB Live cards, but I keep hearing that it would be a better card for gaming. I think that's mostly just EAX support, but I could be wrong.

What was said above....the Chaintech will be better for music and movies, but not games. Im not sure if the Chaintech even supports EAX, but its still a great card nonetheless. What do you do more...game or jam?

Jammin'!

Is this the card you spoke of? http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/FeedBack/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16829120103

I will purchase it if so , $23.00 ! Maybe I'll see a huge music performance boost from my audigy 1 ls.
