My window unit I use to cool my case is starting to **** me off. Its gotten cold outside so now it wont run. My CPU is cruising up over 50*C and making beautiful BSODs. How do I go about making this sucker just on or off, none of the thermostat crap? Or is there some way to modify its temp probe?

There are several ways. The easiest is to move the temp probe. It is positioned against the evaporator of the AC. Just bend it out of the way and stick it somewhere warmer and the unit should stay on. You can also completely bypass the thermostat. The temp probe will attach to a thermostat controler that will probably have two wires connected to it. Just connect those wires together and you have taken the thermostat out of the loop.

my only question is, whats in that sucker? Kinda bent it around a good bit. Is there mercury or anything overly toxic in there?

I'm not really sure what is in those things. The thermostat is obviously mechanical, so it's not a thermocouple. My guess would be some sort of bi-metal or fluid that expands/contracts to opperate it, but I don't really know. I wouldn't recommend eating it.

How old is the air conditioner?
Jumping out probe is best bet. Is it crimped or screwed on?
If it crimped then cut wire strip back the insulation and uses wire nut.
If it is screwed on just move one wire to author screw.
Remember if make your changes so thy can go back when needed
