I am going to build a new comp. for my gf (her parents are paying for it :D ) and I wonder what HSF would be the most quiet? I had a 60mm to 80mm adapter and would like to use a 80mm fan to cool the cpu, wonder which hs would be good for an adapter.

I would get an XP for her, heard it wouldn't produce much heat and she wouldn't oc it of course. please help

the swiftech's are supposed to be good and you can mount 80mm fans right out of the box so that might be an idea

The swiftech's are way overkill for a non-overclocked CPU. Just look at the HSF reviews and pick a cheap but decent HS and get a low cfm fan. There's no need to go over 30$ for a non-overclocked Xp at all.

Would a

Volcano 5 ($15)do the job?
Athlon 1.5+ ghz,
4500 rpm
31 dBA.
32 cfm

or a Gladiator ($19)
rate for Athlon 1.5ghz
5800 rpm
31 dBA
34 cfm

thanks

Either one sounds fine. It doesn't take much to be better than the AMD retail heatsinks.

The real question, the one I ask everyone who comes to me for advice in buying a new computer, is...
"What are you going to USE it for?"
If she's going to just surf the web, and chat, get a duron, or celeron, TNT2, and max 256 ram. If she's going to game heavily, Athlon 1200+, Gforce2 MX 400 (minimum, or better), 512 Ram (DDR even better). If it's for high end graphics work, P4 1.5+, 256 Rambus not PC133, OS XP a must with the P4, Gforce3 or higher (Elsa Gloria 3 or O2). Cooling the same question applies. The more you stress the CPU, the better cooling you will need. Even at stock speeds. The 80mm fan is a really good idea if you want to keep the noise level down. Even a cheapie HS lapped, with an 80mm fan and adapter would keep temps at a nice level at stock speed.
