ok, i remember a while back there was a way that came out on how to use norton ghost to unlock space that may or may not exist on an hdd. does anyone still have a link to the article? i remember i did it on an old drive, but i cant remember how to do it anymore.

No, it never 'unlocked' anything. It was just a glitch in Symantec's software.
