Something like the lines of Gettysburg but more on a large scale, raising the army, choosing your type of troops, etc. Not just the here's what historically accurate. Prefer military or fantasy type settings. Must be able for multiplayer on a lan. WE don't like the Sci-fi that much....
Theres only three words...

second that, look out for its expansion to (barbarian invasion) or even a double pack that might have a good deal on it.
future games of this nature to look out for:
- warhammer mark of chaos
- battle for middle earth 2 (note not 1, 2 has alot of new features in its campaign map which is supposidly going to make it alot more like RTW where as the first is just mission driven)

Definitely Total War, you cant get much bigger battles than having the troop scale set to the highest.

With high detail it will take a godly PC though ;)

I run it on high with a 3.2P4 and a 9800XT at about 35fps, works great on singleplayer as usually the opposing armies are not usually as big as yours (if your good). Its just the the fire arrows that slow me down. Now large scrimages and multiplayer, well that's another story. I did manage to crash windows by making a massive army of incendiary pigs and lighting them all at the same time though, that was quite amusing.

you can generally get alot of performance back in RTW with settings troop detail (not unit size) to high instead of highest, this has all the troops around you rendered in 3d with ones quite a bit further away as sprites I can everything else on full and run it fine, but having it on highest (where I persume 3d rendering is at a much larger distance or simply everything is 3d) slows me to a crawl when looking at around 2 full armys

R:TW is Kinda an RTS game, though to true RTS players it is not.
you want to raise your Army as in start from Scratch?
Cossacks, by CDV look up that game, or other RTS games made by CDV you are talking 1000's of troops all individually controlled, or grouped into formations and controlled by formation,
I had Cossacks European War back in 2000 it was great, American COnquest, another similar game in 2002 Great as well, look up both of them, graphics could be better, but CDV was building for Gameplay not Graphics. the way it should be IMO.
unfortunately not many games play like Gettysburg anymore, since computers are so much more powerful and people want more to do. look into a demo of Cossack, heck look at a Demo of R:TW and see what you like.

I'll third R:TW although it's not really much of a Real Time Stratgey, more of a tactics. "Take this hill to wear out the enemy when they come up and it slows them down so your archers pick more off, bla bla bla"

Try BF2 as the commander. Sure you dont have total control but it's fun.

I would not recommend spending $40 on BF2, just so you can play with the commander mode, its not all that interesting, nor is BF2 in any way shape or form a large scale RTS.
BF2 sure is real time but most of the noobs lack the strategy part.

Still, i don't think there is much replay value to:
Artillery, supply drop, UAV, repeat
Even once the noobs dissipate, i doubt very many people will listen to the commander, it would be nice if they would, but unfortunately it just doesn't happen.
i was j/k :p
there's nothing RTS like to BF2.

I would have to go with BF2 not being an RTS, most of the time when I think RTS I hink of a game where in multiplayer everyone is playing an RTS not just to people. But if you want to add BF2 to the RTS catagory then you might as well add Natural Selection as well
Rise of Nations, Age of Kings, and Dawn of War were all pretty awesome, I never tried Rome Total war though
