first off: 1.4g athlon @ 1.4g ;) 512 pc2100 crucial ddr Epox EP-8k7a. SK-6 thermalright heatsink / delta screamer. second off, i have an enlight 7237 (?) case. third, i have yet got a frickin rear fan, which i know is gonna solve (somewhat) the problem i'm having. my case is at 25C which i have been told is good (back me up, k?). my cdroms, however, are frickin hot. also, i read every damn article on the "cooling" section of the site, so i have some good ideas, like increasing airflow. I don't plan to over clock (1.4g is alotta power, as of now). so, will a rear fan suck some heat off my hd's and cdroms?

ps: cpu @ 41C @ 20C room

so, just gimme some feedback, it would be most appreciated by this humble newbie! thanx

sounds like you've got a pretty good setup. yes 25C is GREAT for case temps. first reaction to your question is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... course then i dropped into OC'er mode and then said "aw chuck it, thats why we do this", and off i go...

*shakes head*

anyhow
yeah, it'll help, dunno how opposed you are to putting holes in your case, but one in the top pulling hot air out of your case and exhausting it is going to give you the best results. putting one in the back is going to have to draw that hot air from your floppy devices over your mobo/CPU and generally be a bad idea... thats why it's good to have two exhaust fans, one out the top and one out the back... one for the mobo and one for the perhipials.

be sure you have a nice solid, high CFM fan up front down low and you're going to be good to go.

good luck and keep us posted.

cut it (mad gleam) in fact 25 is good leave it alone, 41 however at default, i dont know... get a 80mm fans, put one in the back blowing in onto the cpu (gives it cold air) and the air will be take put by th fan in you psu

i wouldn't have a fan blowing in at the back as it will disrupt airflow, alwys remember one rule, hot air particles rise, the back of your pc (where all the wires are)will be hotter as well, so have air blowing in form the front and blowing out from the rear.

Ok, now comes to the front of the case. there is a damn good fan in front, on the bottom suckin air in...with the fron panel off. if i put the front panel on, the case is gonna heat up a bit. this (guess) is probably due to the crappy ventilation on the front panel. also may be because there is no rear fan, i dunno. my last pc had a rear fan. it got a bit dusty, but i managed to keep it clean, and cool.

Also, does dynamat conduct heat? I am going to pick some up to make this frickin thing quieter. I am goin to put some on the sides, that's probably it. i just wondered if the stuff warms up the case at all. anyone use it?

I'd say go with an exhaust in the back and an exhaust on top;
another thing I've been doing lately is using ducts to direct room air directly to the cpu from the front-I use an 80mm fan in two empty 5 1/4 drive bays and plastic to make the ducts.

With this setup I average 9c drop in cpu temps in two pcs.

Good luck

agreed. thats what i'm doing here in part...

All i wanna do is put a rear fan in. i really don't want to put a hole in my case. all that i feel needs to be done is a rear fan to take some heat off of my cdroms. is this a really bad idea? i do realize a top fan would be alot better, but would a rear fan suffice for now? thanx a ton for all the feed back!!!

The rear exhaust should help: one of the tricks is to try and match up the amount of air getting blown into the case and the amount getting blown out. Another hint is that heat rises so keeping exhaust fans as high as possible is usually best.

NOTE: airflow in a case is weird- what works best in one pc sometimes is horrible in another so experiment!

The rear fan helped take the heat off of the cdroms (thank god), overall, my case temp averages 25C @ 20C room temp. Processor runs at about 41C (is this good/bad, what?). My heatsink only gets warm...it isn't hot at all (impressive!). I did put that dynamat on. my side panel weighed a ton after putting some on. the high whine is gone, it is now replaced by a moderate hum (it is still kinda loud, but tolerable).

those temps are very acceptable, with those temps u could afford to take out your noiseir fans and replace with quiter ones to stop u going deaf!

OR: you could keep the noisier fans and OVERCLOCK that thing!!:D

(Sorry, I can't help it: I see a cpu running at stock speed and my fingers get itchy!!)

so, 41/42C is acceptable for idle. now, what is the idle temp i want to avoid? how high is too high for idle, and load. now, my load temp is about 46/47C w/some heavy bryce5 work. so i'm just curious how high i wanna go :) overclocking may occur in the near future...maybe then i can get u guys off my back, lol :)
