I am looking for a bundle of codecs, because I am too lazy to go and find all of them again. Something that is free of spy/mal/crap ware.

Any suggestions?

I recommend ffdshow

No need for tens of different codecs. Almost everything is handled by the same libavcodec. Ffdshow is in constant development though and some builds may be unstable. I recommend ffdshow-20051013.exe as a stable and well performing build.

does ffdshow come with windows??? i think i remember deleting something like that for some reason or another. now all i have is regular divX codec.
does anybody else reccomend ffdshow???

btw why is 9mmCensor banned?

You arent allowed to discuss that sort of stuff dude. Its for mods/admins to know and normal members never to find out :p

I have my own opinions on the fact. Personally I would install either Media Player Classic with Real and Quicktime alternative along with Defiler Pack, or do the same thing, except eliminate Defiler Pack along with Media Player Classic and replace it with VideoLan Player.

Either way you should have compatibility with everything under the Sun, but their are some excellent threads dealing with this exact question, and they do a better job of making more wide suggestions, so you can pick and choose:

LIST OF ALL NEEDED CODECS/PLAYERS FOR FILES YOU GET HERE!

I'm really sick of everyone asking the same question over and over. I figure if there is a thread stickied here people might read it. I have cross-posted this in all of the help forums. Updated May 15th, 2005.

If you not experienced with computers and are going to get any of the 'players' below, I personally suggest the Video Lan. Its minimal but includes everything you should need.

All-in-one Players

VIDEO LAN
www.videolan.org
Note: The newest VLC release as of this edit now supports H.264!

ZOOM PLAYER
http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/formats/ogm.shtml

CORE PLAYER
http://www.corecoded.com/

Standalone Players (Ie...codecs required. See below for individual codecs)

Media Player Classic
http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html
a)Once installing the codecs, In MPC you should go to View -> Options -> Filters, and disable all built in filters. If you have problems with .mkv files you can leave the built in .mkv checked.
b)As for the auto loading of subtitles or dubs, go to View -> Options -> playback: check boxes 'auto-load audio files' & 'auto-load subtitles'
c)To set the language, go to View -> Options -> Playback -> Dvd/Ogm, and click each radio button menu/audio/subtitles and set a language you want to have

MPLAYER
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
And for those Linux/Alternative OS users, MPlayer works very well. If you're using Gentoo, make sure your config includes matroska, ogg, vorbis, xvid, cpu optimizations, etc., else you'll get a crappy emerge! Watch those options carefully!

If you refuse to download an All-in-One Player, here are a few good codec links:
Codec Packs
If you are going to get any of the 'packs', I personally suggest the Defiler Pack. Its minimal but includes everything you should need. Even matroska.

DEFILER PACK

K-LITE CODEC PACK

NIMO CODEC PACK

Individual Codecs - Updated as stated by AlienZeroo

1. DIVX CODEC [only!]

2. XVID CODEC

3. TOBIAS OGG SPLITTER

4. MATROSKA PACK

5. VOB SUB

I recommend to install the codecs in such order as above starting from 1.

If anyone has anything to add, feel free. If you do, please include full instructions

Q: Which of the above catagories would Windows Media Player come under?
A: download the Codec packs and you will be good.

Q: Wouldn't life be so much easier if there was only 1 file format for videos?
A: actually its a good thing there is multiple kinds, some are good for dvd, some are good for quality some are good for having small files, some are good for having multiple streams. they all have there uses.

Updated codec thread + DVD-AVI conversion (READ THIS ONE)

I've noticed theres a thread for basic playback of files. There are often problems regarding files however, mostly due to the many newer formats that go released without people knowing. I have a list of them all, along with newer ones for added functionality, and a tutorial on how to easily make your own AVI/OGG files using all-free software.

For decoding:

FFDshow: Rapidly making codec packs obsolete, due its unique Directshow filtering capabilities. Plays almost everything if you want it to.

OGG Filter and Gabest OGM Splitter: Enables OGM container support, one of the better handlers for this file type.

DivX Audio Compressor: Certain MPEG-4 files use DivX audio, so this allows playback of that audio without having to install the horrid DivX codec.

VSFilter: If you can't play subtitles, this is why. It enables filtering of subtitles onto the current video with a subtitle-ready media player.

Matroska Container Pack: The most stable and compatible MKV/MKA playback online (Also the official developers).

AC3Filter: Plays files encoded with AC3, and variants of DTS. Makes things easier for those with external Dolby decoders.

HDTVPump: Plays back HD/ATSC transport streams.

XviD: An open-source MPEG-4 decoder that beats DivX in quality by a lot. Doom9 can back me on this one.

MPEG-2 Codec: Decodes MP2 files (IE DVD) in a variety of media players.

Ligos Indeo Codecs: A codec not widely used today, but helpful for decoding a handful of other file types.

Monkeys Audio: A newer audio codec thats making the rounds as a codec for AVI-type files.

3ivX: Another MPEG-4 decoder that works with MP4 files made under DIV3 or 3ivX 4CC formats.

HuffYUV: Lossless decoder for Win32 YUV files.

If you need Quicktime and Real support, Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative work nicely without the nagging registration.

To playback files while taking advantage of all the features of these codecs, use Media Player Classic, the top authority on playback. All formats can be played, and audio/video/subtitle switching is embedded. Its far more easier and powerful than VLC. If all else fails for you however, maybe you'd better stick to VLC.

For Encoding:

First, download/install AutoGK and DVD Decrypter.

Insert your DVD, then open DVD Decrypter. On the top, go into Mode, and select IFO. After that, click the DVD/Hard Drive icon and wait for it to rip. There is now a folder in your C:\ drive with the VOB files containing the video data. Making it ISO instead of IFO will create a DVD image, useful if you want to make an exact copy of the source DVD. This also works with PS2 games to an extent.

With that done, open AutoGK. Make sure DVD input is bubbled in. Click the folder next to input directory and select the folder containing the VOB files you just ripped (It'll be a VIDEO_TS folder). In output file, click the folder next to it, and give your AVI a name.

Next select which audio track you want to use, and which subtitle track you want to use. After that, define your size, and in advanced settings, make sure the codec of choice is XviD. Everything else can be left alone.

When thats all finished, click add job, then start. An average DVD to AVI encode takes a few hours.

To re-encode a video file, make sure file input is bubbled in, and follow the same steps, excluding the VOB-only ones.

This should be all you need to know about the playing and making of any format you could possibly need, enjoy
