I dont understand why my HD thinks while its not doing anything! Ive been trying to fall asleep, but Ive been tossing and turning to the noise. Its like every 10 seconds the HD thinks... sounds like I have a cricket in my case...
your harddrive thinks? i reckon as its self aware its probably doing it deliberately to keep you awake :D
Seriously tho, what brand hdd is it? and how old? it shouldnt be audibly 'chirping', or loud enough to keep you awake....

if its that loud, i cant imagine that would be a good thing. I suggest running the manufacutrers diagnostic utilities to make sure everything is still ok

use WinAAM to set the drive to quiet mode. You will lose some performance but the noise goes down considerably.

I tried WinAAM but the program doesnt work for me. I have my Raptor and the Maxtor, but I believe 100% its the Raptor being noisy at nights...

I have heard that the Raptor can be noisy. Have you run any diagnostics on it? You could always turn the computer off when you go to sleep. :p

I don't quite know the type of sound, but I lay my Hitachi 7200 rmp on two 4" pieces of thin, soft tygon tubing.

It sounds like something internal, rather than vibration, but that's a good suggestion. People do similar things with rubber bands, etc. It wouldn't hurt to give that a shot just in case the noise is vibration based.
why not turn off your computer at night? Or sound proof your case so that it will be more quiet.

I've used rubber bands before too. That's when I had it up in a bay, I would pin it up against the wall with rubber bands and the tubing between the HDD and the wall. But now I lay it on the cool bottom. Yeah, you're right, it's prolly a serious mechanized problem. Maybe that's an early warning for self-destruction if it's really loud?
Just have your drive power down after 15min...
