I īve got the celeron 400 processor and abit bh-6 motherboard.if i change the bus to 83mhz (500mhz)it system freezes up just before windows screen.with 100mhz bus (600mhz )system boots to windows but crashes after a little while.its my friends old processor and he had it running with 500 easily.so,i would need some help with bios settings Vcores etc.could it be a souncard problem.i might try to disable it.
the system:
Soundblaster awe 63 value edition
Isdn card(not in use,iīll remove it)
Maxtor 6.2 gb HD
atapi cd rom drive(primary)
hp cd writer 9100 (slave)
56 modem attached
so help appreciated!!

so i forgot,i would like to get 500mhz out of it,its enough and the @600 try was on 2.2 corevoltage.maybe it would work with proper cooling.

Yeah, that sounds like a cooling issue @ 100 fsb. What core voltage at 83 fsb ? If ya can, cool it down well and run 100 fsb, your other components will like the in spec pci bus much better than the 41.5 MHz on the 83 fsb.
Those 400 Celerons don't often hit 100 FSB. The core of those old CPUs usually are only good for 500 to 550 MHz. Luta is right about 83 MHz running the PCI bus out of spec. Try better cooling and pray you hit 100 FSB with 2.2v, if not, you might be stuck with running the FSB at 75 MHz.

Yeah, but he is already able to boot into windows without errors etc @ 100 fsb. After in windows it crashes, so he should just have to take care of the cooling issue. The BH6 has no cpu temp monitoring, so if the sys is running warm ya know at 2.2v that Cellie has to be cookin' :D
It shouldn't be the sound card. I'm using an old AWE 64 as well and have another in my son's 300a@504 rig (which is also on a BH6 1.01)
Good point Luta, I misread his post and thought 100 FSB was freezing prior to the Windows screen, but that was with 83 FSB. In that situation I recommend doing four things: 1) cooling mods, 2) cooling mods, 3) cooling mods, and 4) sneaking the voltage up to no more than 2.3v, assuming you have done the cooling mods first.
In this situation I think cooling could be the problem...
Turning it up to 2.2v would make lotsa heat ... Try to get half decent case fans doesn't have to be that great since it isn't for a whole lot....
Like batboy said cooling fs!!!

Its my friends old processor, and he has had it running at @500 with no problem.i donīt think he even had changed the voltage.so itīs not the cores fault....more suggestions?...
the celerons locked multiplier is 6.so changing the multiplier in the bios has no affection or has it?
mostly iīd like to know the agp/cpuclock settings and the sel66/100 settings and the proper core voltage

The same CPU placed in a different system can overclock differently. Different motherboard, different PCI cards, different AGP card, different drives, and different cooling can all conspire to change things. Just because it ran at a certain speed in one computer means nothing except that the potential is there.
I would do the following things. Remove the CPU heatsink, clean it up (probably has crappy heat tape on it or dried up ineffective thermal paste), and then reinstall it using a good thermal paste. Then, add a couple extra case fans if you haven't already done so. Next, go into the BIOS and disable the speed error check, set the SEL100/66 to high, and the AGPclock/CPU/clock to 2/3 (if you're trying 100 FSB). The multiplier is locked do do not try changing that from the default 6X. It's best to try using the default voltage of 2.0v first, but I suspect you'll need to raise the voltage up to either 2.1v or 2.2v for stability. Trust me on this, I've been there, done that, and have the T-shirt to prove it. The primary secret to overclocking is cooling and more cooling. Heat is the enemy.

Right, the multiplier is locked.
OK. sel66/100=high
agp/cpuclock=2/3 (if at 100 fsb)
agp/cpuclock=1/1(if 75 fsb or below)You don't say what vid card ya got. Some handle a higher agp bus better than others, so at 83 fsb you'll have to try the 1/1 and if ya have probs 2/3. Any nVidia card I've used will handle the 1/1 at 100 fsb and below.
core voltage= 2.1v-2.3v (if you raise the core voltage, make sure you are well cooled)
See how slow I type?? Batboy responded while I was typing response :D

well hello again.i put on some extra cooling on the top of the processor.thereīs actually 2 fans on top of each other,,,took one from my pentium 2 350 heatsink---and now,on the 100mhz bus it works this fine.i can use the net and stuff, but when i start a game, like max payne or UT,the system freezes.....
yeah i should buy a good fan,suggestions...maybe a Titan Fan
would do the trick to get this stable, and some new thermal grease.oh,now the corevoltage is 2.1 .....2.2 didnīt do any good,it crashed earlier....2.3 neither....and i tried to suck some air out with a vacuum cleaner just for kicks, but no use....;-)
so with these settings
100 fbs
agp/cpuclock 2/3
sel66/100 high
and corevoltage 2.1
now im gonna download motherboard monitor again to see the temps,in the bios when i put this machine on,temp was only like 34 (celsius)degrees, but well see..
so suggestions for fans and grease....
Ok, it's definitely heat related problems. Two reasons, you added another fan which helped a little. 3D games work the CPU hard which raises the temps up to a critical point. Also, 2.2v and 2.3v don't help with stability which also suggests that you're too hot. Raising voltage also raises temps. Sounds like you might get it to run at 100 FSB once you do some cooling mods. For thermal paste, Arctic Silver is the best I've ever used. If you're on a real tight budget, the cheaper Radio Shack silicon thermal paste is not bad. Do you have a slot 1 Celeron or is it the socket Celeron? Which type of CPU you have makes a big difference on what cooler you buy. If you're on a tight budget, try getting the thermal paste first and maybe lapping your heatsink, that might be enough to get you stable.
Putting two fans on top each other is called fan stacking. Often the two fans fight each other and cause turbulance, so it's far from doubling the flow and in some situations, does very little good. If you put a case fan (like a 80mm or a 90mm) in the lower front of the case to blow air in and then mount another fan in the back of the case near the CPU to exhaust hot air out, that seems to work pretty good. You might have to do some cutting to the case in order to do this. You'll probably have to evenually get a better CPU cooler.
The celerons 400 dont get that hot... The average speed that chip was overclocked too was 542 mhz...
Lookin at one of the cpu's in the database is a cheap setup that can get you to 600 maybe depending if your PCI slots and AGP will take it...
Generic Slot 1 Adapter
Golden Orb
Artic Silver II
Intake Fan
I currently have a Golden Orb on my Slot 1 P3 and it is very good considering for its price and its performance... As well as you dont need much cooling...
The thermal paste really helps alot too (Hope you still dont have that crappy thermal pad or whatever that the intel provides you with it'll be old really old and possibly dry)
And the case fan :D
By the way what kind of ram do you have?
If those older Celerons don't get hot, then why does Intel put heatsinks and fans on them. Any CPU will get hot if you overclocked them and if you increase the voltage. Yes, they can handle hotter temps than the newer coppermines, but they still can get hot. Cooling is the key here, same as with any other overclocking project.
Meh.. Hes already at 34 ... If he can buy a cheap one it'll go down to the high 20's... IT's all good.

the celeron is connected to the mobo with slotket adapter, ram is 128 mb sdram 100mhz, i had also an older 64 megs sdram with 100mhz bus,but i removed it to try this overclocking,iīll put it back the next time i open the case.....so iīll try not tho raise the voltage anymore, already tried the 2.3. i,m just trying to enhance this old system a little bit,iīll buy a good cpu fan and some thermal paste and get back to you then..may take a while...a week maybe...anyway iīm gonna put up a new system anyway...so if itīll become costly iīll just save the money to a entirely new processor, maybe 800-1,2 celeron and start to overclock that...

so i add the thermal paste between the cpu and the heatsink?how long does it last, donīt have any experience about those, just toothpaste.......
Those BH6 motherboards don't have a CPU temp probe, only a motherboard (system) temp probe, so 34 degrees is still a little warm in my humble opinion. Thermal paste will usually last several months to a year or so, before it starts drying out, depending on the quality of paste used. When I've seen used Celeron 566 or 600 CPUs selling for $20 to $30 that should overclock up to 850 or 900 MHz, it might be time to retire that old 400.

well so i went and bought a titan fan with cooler.and added that silver grease paste which came along with it.about 17 bucks.(80 Finnish Marks).and it seems to work just fine.couple rounds of UT,little max payne and rally masters for testing and no problemos.i should maybe try pifast or something for maximum usage for the cpu.core voltage still is in 2.1.i hope this doesnīt come crashing down.system temp is stilll about 30-35....
so thank you guys for the help! iīll be in touch if problems occur....if they do,iīll just buy a new processor...
Awesome. So, you're running at 100 MHz FSB? If so, then I must of been right about you needing better cooling. Nice overclock. We are all glad and honored to help out a fellow overclocker.

Good job with the oc... I know its really a waste sometimes if the chip is still working and you want to throw it away hehe like me.. :D
