my neighbor wants the biggest HD she can get for carrying around mp3's to friends. she wants external. naturally she called her comp guru accross the street as she called me :p
i told her she can save $$$ by bying internal and gettin an enclosure..so guys
i know i can get a 250gig HD for under $100..you guys know anything bigger than that for a reasonable price?
im also lookin on a good deal for a enclosure..im not sure if enclosures these days support sata or not..so if they do bring it on as the usb 2.0 or firewire may benifit!

so even if you find a 400gb for a good price please post it!

anything with moving parts is bound to fail. when it comes to hard drives, buy the one with the best warranty.

I think you'll have to do PATA and not SATA if you want to do external.

I have seen a few external SATA enclosures but you are sure to have a bigger selection if you look for PATA. They might be cheaper too.

250gbs of mp3s?

Assuming she has 100gb of mp3s, that's 25 dvd-r that can be had for less than $15.

I know it's not nearly as versatile, but it's just another option, and of course doesn't allow for sharing mp3s.

I've only had a problem with maxtor years ago. It was a 15gig drive and what ya know they ship a new one i ship the old one back after I get the info off the drive and it was a 30gig maxtor :) There service is good and they backed there warrenty then i'd still trust them.

I've used Seagate, Hatachi, Maxtor, WD. Like them all but currently in my new system I got 2x 250gig Hatachi SATA II's (hey they where cheap) and an external 160gig Seagate. All work very well and there quiet and don't put out much if any heat.

Maxtor and WD is a little nosier, expecially the Raptors. But other then that there all good drives. None but that one 15gig have givin me problems. It did fail on me after all the info was off the drive though and did a few format runs.

I hate it when people who've had one Maxtor drive go bad think they're the worst brand ever.

I've owned mostly Maxtor drives for a few years...a convert after a couple dozen WDs between myself and clients died prematurely. I've NEVER had ONE SINGLE Maxtor fail on me...and only one on a client.

And don't be complaining about waiting 2 months on a rebate to come back..that's really not very long. My latest Seagate rebate took longer than that.

Personally,
I have had at least 6 Maxtors in past few years.
Only 1 is still working.

I have 3 maxtors all at least 3 years old, none of them gave me any problems. Infact my 120gig has been droped a few times and it runs like a charm.

WD for me....even the one from 1993 is still up and running. I will stick with them.... I have a fujitsu from 97 that still works great. Don't have any working Deathstars or MAxors....

I just ordered 4 Maxtor drives. All the same kind, from Newegg at the same time. 2 of them were DOA. 50% is not very good odds if you ask me.

It really all depends on what you're using them for and how many you have.
The DJ for our Wedding had approximately 1tb worth of mp3's.

The external SATA enclosures that I have seen that go for less than the cost of the drive to go in them use eSATA to connect to the PC, which almost nobody has.

Seagate>Maxtor and I'll also note Western Digital isn't bad either. I think I qualify when I say Maxtors do not seem to last....I bought 8 indentical hard drives back when I building some comps for myself & friends. 1 of them today is still working, yes you heard right 1! What a headache, after I started buying Seagate again I've had ZERO issues,

2x 120Gig Seagates (Identical)
1x 160 Western Digital

Can't wait for Black Friday this year again Woooo
