I got home today, and turned on my pc as usual, i found a note left by my parent saying a m8 had been round to take back the cd-writer we share. fair enuf, i was expecting him to anyways. So my pc starts booting - then error: invalid system disk. Ah crap, what has he done?? after more poking aroun i end up with a bios checksum error. Oh dear, this isnt looking good. More poking around, and more failed attempts to boot. This lasted for a while, my pc was on for a good half hour. Then i noticed it. There was a distinct high pitched whine missing, he had manage to knock the power supply wires for the CPU fan out! arg!! i very, VERY quickly cut the power, plugged it in, and rebooted. When it got to windows it was at 48C! i really hate to think how hiugh it went and how close i came to losing my first CPU. I tentativly watched as the temp came down to a much nicer 32C, and now im relieved :D

Your saying your system was on for 30 mins with no fan running on the heatsink?

My fan sometimes just doesn't start spinning when I power up my PC, because of the fan only being a lousy 4K RPM you can't really notice if its on or not, but luckaly I have a duct w/ 2 80mm fans and the temp only climes about 8C if fan is off and stoping at about 54C so I'm not in danger if the CPU fan failes... Always Have Backup!

BTW: 5 posts ago got my 5th star!
