ive never had a sound card before and everyone keeps going on about how good they are so i think i will buy one. thing is, i dont wanna spend loads of ££££ on one, i only really use a set of headphones(with mic) for audio. is it worth me buying a low end soundcard (examples please) or just sticking with the onboard? i dont watch movies on my pc, its used for gaming.
thanks

cheap sound cards for about $25 or ~30£ :
Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit - 8-channel, good for gaming and general use
Chaintech AV-710 (Via Envy24 HTs) - 8-channel but only good on 2-channel high-sample rate, good for music and better sound quality than soundblaster above
since your primary use is gaming, i would recommend the 24-bit

would it be an improvment over onboard sound?

if your K7N2 had a MCP-T southbridge it would be comparable to an audigy2, but i looked it up and it's a gigabit mcp, so these soundcards are better

most definetly. Soundboard audio (from my experience) is rather limited in features.
