hey guys..

I installed XP the other day, on top of 98se...
was running ME prior, heard about all the Improved fps etc.

well
I loaded CS, and I used to run it at 60+ fps, now it waivers around 30!!! it actually get's choppy!!!

and lost like 400+ pts on 3dm2k1

what the heck??

I've lost some serious gaming performance overall...
I'm not impressed what so ever...

I went and installed 2k drivers for my board, and installed the XP drivers for my vid card...

WHAT"S GOIN ON!!!

i'm not a happy camper :(

is it my radeon?, I keep hearing how crap it is..

here's my specs:

MSI K7 pro
athlon 650@705
384 mb ram
20 gb IBM@7200
30gb WD @7200
RADEON 64mb DDR

Right Click the exe file for the application and select properties and you will see a tab which states compatibility

My 3DMark2001 score went from 6993 in WinME to 6785 in WinXP. So yes there is definately a loss in gaming performance. You have to remember that WinXP is still NTFS, which is slower than FAT32. Mind you that a 3% loss is no big deal in my system, but a 50% loss of framerates in your system is. I would consider upgrading to a GeForce 3 if gaming is important to you.

You should try a clean install instead of an upgrade. I noticed a difference in speed from when I first Uprgraded to when I formated and did a clean install. Even when you upgrade and convert from Fat32 to NTFS it leaves your old Win98 files there. And they are still usable for the most part. Atleast that's what happened when I did just the "upgrade".

You should not have lost that much during a normal install.

I don't know what drivers your using for the Radeon, but when I ran XP RC1, I had a 3100 something 3dmark score, which was basically the same as the score I had when I ran 98se. My games also ran just fine, some improved a tad, others dropped a bit. In all cases it was just a few FPS, like 5-10 or so.

This was with a Radeon LE, using the drivers that came with XP.

I hope you get your problem sorted out. :(

it's a little better than before..

I went and dl'ed latest XP drivers for Radeon
dl'ed the NT version of DX8
and used a redeon tweaker and OC'ed my card mad crazy

260/235 or something don't remember exactly...

improved my framerates somewhat, and I can actually play Counter-strike without being a jerky SLIDE SHOW
and can hover above 30fps most of the time...

and HL doesn't seem to like the Radeon Opengl drivers, because of their attempt to stop cheating that ppl did by making walls transparant etc... so when u play in OGL u get a stack overflow and quit. and my cards perf. was way better in Ogl....

this is rediculous....

and re-installing EVERYTHING is gonna be a pain....

man....
