linuxiso (http://www.linuxiso.org) has quite a few distro's iso images for d/l..

or you can buy the cds from the distributer.. (which distro were you looking at?)
most of the distros have instructions on their websites, or try:
linuxnewbie (http://www.linuxnewbie.org)

Personally, for someone new to Linux, I would recommend you going out and buying a box set to begin with. You get all the CDs, installation manuals, as well as setup/configuration manuals for once you have it installed. Most include some level of tech support for usually a limited time.

The cost of a basic desktop Linux distro only runs around $20-$30 so it's not a bad investment.

I download all my distros now but I find myself going to the books that came with my SuSe and Mandrake sets quite often when I run into a jam.

Store bought versions also often come with extra CDs that include hundreds of useful programs for you to use.

Another good idea is going to a bookstore and looking for a good book on Linux. They almost always come with their own installation set of various types. I bought a book on Red Hat secrets and got the complete 3 CD set of Red Hat 7.1...not to mention the 500+ page book...

There are several great places for finding information on Linux.

www.linuxdoc.org

This site stores all the HOWTO documents you could want, want to setup linux RAID? it's there, want to setup your modem? it's there, want to setup your own ISP? it's there.

www.cheapbytes.com

Don't want to pay $20+ for an official version? Don't want to download and ISO image over a 56k modem? You can get many of the popular versions of linux here for the cost of the CD and the time to burn it.

www.freshmeat.com
www.sourceforge.com

These two sites are great for getting some information on linux, but they really shine for finding programs for linux that will do just about anything you want. There are rarely guarantees on this software but often it's a great source for what you want.

And as always there are newsgroups and messageboards for asking questions. They are always needed.

I bought "Linux for Dummies", and it came with the 3 Redhat 7.1 CD's. Trouble is, I need "Linux for the Complete, Total, Utter, Idiotic Clueless Fool". :o  :(

Is that just the US or can the forgotten millions (well, 60 million) (when it comes to computer equipment/software releases) in the UK get their greasy hands on it?

Mandrake 8.1 can be found very cheap ($20 USD?). I'm running it right now and I love it.
Don't expect much in terms of tech support. The again, I don't think you'll need it. Mandrake has great hardware detection and it's very easy to use. It's primarily designed for newbies (I am an experienced user and I still use it myself).

Red Hat might be more pricy.
