View Full Version : Remote Desktop for XP Home
Is there anyway to get Remote Desktop for XP Home?
I like realvnc....but i hate how it doesnt fill the screen. I cannot stand scrolling down everytime...
Any way at all on how to get it? Anybody made a standalone program for the server?
Thanks, ps2cho
From a little googling I don't think there anything you can do. XP Home can act as a remote desktop client, but can not be a server to connect to other desktops.

You mean like control other peoples PC? If so yeah its possible, I did it once to my friend, to help him fix something. I forget how excaly and no longer have XP home, though I believe you dl the client off the net, and just connect to another pc using MSN messenger.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx try that.
Well if you are willing to dish out $50 for a licience, the enterprise version of RealVNC scales the remote desktop to fit your desktop. Other than that, theres several other remote control programs available.

Alrighty...thanks anyways guys.
Or, if you don't want to shell out $50, you could download Ultr@VNC (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/). Select the 'auto scaling' checkbox when making a new connection, make the window full screen, and you're set.

That works perfectly :) Thanks Jig

TightVNC (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/tightvnc.html) will allow you to do that, If both systems have the same Screen Resolution. It is fairly easy to setup and use. once the connection is established, then you can select to use it full screen or in the "box"

Open port 5900 on your router. Set it to forward traffic to your internal IP.

ok great... Also! how would i set this up so i could on multiple pc's ... like i was at home and someone needed some help at work.. i have 15 workstations here .. an i was kinda just thrown into the IT spot because i knew a little about computers...
For multiple computers you should be able to forward a port for each one and then in the connection dialog specify which computer by entering the port number.
For example:
192.168.0.100: 5900->5900 (enter domainname:5900 to connect to this computer)
192.168.0.101: 5900->5901 (enter domainname:5901 to connect to this computer)
192.168.0.102: 5900->5902 (...)
192.168.0.103: 5900->5903 (...)
192.168.0.104: 5900->5904 (...)
...

Or, Ultr@VNC has a proxy setting and server that will allow you to basically use one computer on the internal network as a proxy and pass through it to access all of the internal computers.

Another vote for Ultr@VNC. I use it primarily for diagnosing relatives' computers and by using reverse connections (viewer in listen mode), you can avoid the hassle of opening ports.
The ability to transparently login is nice as well, compared to RDC where, once you login remotely, the local workstation logs out. This is useful for interactively supporting users while talking with them on the phone (or using the built-in chat feature in Ultr@VNC).
And of course, since VNC is open-sourced, you can also use it with Linux and Mac. I've heard the latest version of Apple Remote Desktop allows for VNC connections as well.
Considering the alternatives (price & compatibility mostly), VNC is wonderful.

Yup, and would probably be easier than forwarding all those ports (and definatly a lot easier if more computers are added to the network) :) Based on Agent Z's first post I thought that he was using TightVNC (which can't use the repeater), but apparently that isn't the case :D

Dont bother with VNC from outside the network. Yeah it works but it is sloooooowwwwww. www.logmein.com best thing since sliced bread and it's 100% FREE. I use it on about 50 machines.
LogMeIn dosen't seem to like me :-/ Software installs fine, and runs perfectly locally (ie CompA "remotely" viewing CompA :D) but once I try accessing another computer over the net it dies. It might be a config problem on my end though... LogMeIn certinaly seems like an amazing VNC alternative if I can just find out whats wrong.

Call their support, they are pretty good actually. I've never had a problem with logmein... and when i log in, i see my 50 machines all waiting for me to connect :D

Nice threadjack
Nice threadjack
Please dont flame. It is related to the thread and is a perfectly fine question.
I would respond to yours as a pointless reply to gain posts.
That had absolutely no value or added any help.
If you have nothing nice or helpful to say, dont say anything.

Agreed. jajmon no need for such comments as they don't help or solve anything. And, it was NOT a threadjack it is related to the subject.
