I had a XP1500+ TBird in a ECS K7S5A and I came home and it was locked up and had a protection error message on screan. I looked and the fan wasn't going (stock AMD heatsink) I thought WTF! I touched the heatsink and it just about took the skin off my fingers. From my experiances with burning up birds, once they burn up they don't get hot anymore. Anyway I thought the fan was bad and put a different hsf on it and restarted it. It ran for about five seconds and the fan stopped. I put an adaptor on fan so it did not plug into board, same thing ran 5 seconds and shut off (just fan) so I tried different psu, same thing. I guess board is screwed and is pulling 12volts down to nothing. The board got so hot it melted the foam pad it was sitting on under CPU socket, it was not in a case. I mean this cpu looked fried. I put it in another board and it cranked up and worked fine! Thank God! So dont loose any sleep about your new XP it is nothing like the old birds which I have had burn up in about 30 seconds when fan came unpluged. :)

Viva la AMD!
I'm glad they took some design clues from those spanky P4s that can run without a HSF (not well, but they run. I still like AMD better). Maybe I'll get one after all. Thanks for the info.
BTW, does anyone else konw about this sort of thing?
