If you can turn a pc into a firewall couldnt you turn one into an unlimited speed Modem? Modems work within set parameters and to get the best out of them you have to make changes to settings. Wouldnt a pc version open those settings to a wider amount of available changes all within a program instead of having to go into the regedit to adjust some things?

I don't understand the question. Modem speed is limited more by how much signal to noise the lines (and switches etc.) in between can actually carry, at the frequencys that they're designed to operate at. The limits are not really set by how good, or poor qaulity the hardware of the modem is.

A firewall is a bit of software, it operates on data at network and transport layers, that is, only once it's taken off the wire (google ISO network). A modem is a bit of hardware, mo-dem means "modulator-demodulator" which refers to the modulation of a wave to carry information - just like in a radio transmitter. It needs oscillators and amplifiers and other funky electronic things to send and recieve it's signals, so you can't recreate it with a PC.
