suspending them by rubber bands or similar will reduce vibration, but there's not much more you can do except sell it and buy a seagate or hitachi.

...Or, if it's an old crappy HDD you dont care about, such as the ones for my server (4GB and 1.6GB), you can do what I did: Put them in a cardboard box (Thermalright one my SI-97 came in) and put THAT in a box filled with packing peanuts (which the SI-97 box was in when it was shipped from Jab-Tech), with slits cut in each box to let the ribbon cables through, but not the peanuts. I'm sure it gets quite hot in there, but probably no less so than in the comp they were originally in (damn old AT cases and their almost zero airflow)
Then the server motherboard sits on top of the box, and that sits on a shelf... Ghetto-silencing FTW!
you can always sound proof your case by lining it with sound dampening material (i ones used industrial short haired carpeting. It worked well and was very cheap)

You could also try WinAAM to set the acoustic mode on it, if it is supported.

wouldent that make my case hot?
ill have to look into the silent mode ty

you could get those removeable drive bay kits that mount in 5 1/4" bays and mount them via rubber grommets, the ones at my votech do very well in silencing even the old quantum fireballs down

That would work no doubt, but I think suspension would be an easier way to eliminate vibration.

well..
is it a loud drive or is it from its mounting that causes noise ?
my guess is the drive is noisy itself ..
what kind of drive is it ??

I read somewhere that hard drives use the case as a heatsink, and suspending them will cause them to run much hotter. I read it in a thread... I'll see if I can dig it up.

anyone ever see those like cases you put a hd in and mount it in a 5.25?

i highly doubt suspending your drive will raise your temps ...if any not worth it if you go that route..
if your getting a fast rpm drive expect louder noise.. i definetly wouldnt stuff it in a box like i seen earlier .. that will raise your temps for sure and im sure effect its life..
maybe look for alternative solutions .. like dampning your case (case temps may factor greatly maybe not depends how you set it up ) or relocating your case to a spot that wont be heard as much when your sleeping ...

I have one in use now. It has a fan to keep the drive cool and the drive itself isn't too loud.
If you are going with SCSI drives, may I recommend the Seagate Cheetahs? They are relatively quiet during regular use; all you can hear is the seek noises (which sadly, are louder than most drives) and a bit of noise at startup. At any rate, I use a Vantec Vortex (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835888110) for my drives. It has a small fan w/filter that can cool off the drive and the built-in dampeners keeps my drives seen and not heard. It fits in a 5.25" enclosure as well.
Also, if you're going to spend so much on drives... don't try and skimp and use cheap rubber bands to suspend a drive. The bands will eventually break and I don't think that you'd want your drives to fall on the bottom of your case.

Yep, with no metal touching it, there is nothing except air to pull the heat from the HD.
would it warm it up with the fan of
like as aposed to no case?

If it's an old Ball bearing drive, there's nothing you can do for the whine. In that case, buy a new Fluid dynamic bearing drive and replace it.

damn so no raptors?
The 74 GB Raptors use the same fluid dynamic ball bearings that modern hard drives use. They're really not that loud.
Like I said, if you're really concerned about noise pick up a vortex and it'll dampen any noise that you can think of. Even without the fan running it will stay within the safe operating temperature of about 40 C
thanks for the help and i just realized lol

You could wear earmuffs/plugs when working on the computer too.

Yep. IIRC the first generation 7200RPM drives used ball bearings and were LOUD bitches eh?
i just had a good idea ill drill a hole through my wall extend all my cables and only have my speekers , montior , keyboard and mouse in my room what you guys think?

Seems a bit drastic....Yes It would work but not that convenient either. Since then you have to go to another room to change Discs, turn on the comp etc. Honestly, just buy an enclosure. The best I've found is the Nexus Silent Drive, though I begrudge paying £40 to silence a £80 HDD. and when you have two, thats the price of another 250GB!
ty and wow i just saw a guy in a nother thread with brian and then another guy in another thread with peter and now you with evil monkey ohh god

p.s. my favorite episode is the one where et runs across the screen

The BEST way to quiet a HDD, is to get a new one.
Anyways, they sell HDD quieters and little cases to fit a HDD in to hide some noise. Other ways are having rubber things around the screws to prevent vibrating noises. All the other recommendations are good too.

It's an old inside joke between a few of the members here... if you couldn't tell, SOME of us had way too much time on their hands. Go HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=359523&page=2&pp=50) and HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=360232) if you want to read on the hilarity and nonsense.

Just make sure your cables are long enough. However, I think that the monitor cable has a certain limit on length depending on screen resolution. Check out HERE (http://www.scala.com/hardware/dvi-vga-cable.html) for more info.
