Hi, i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how i can make my pc quieter ?

My pc isnt exactly loud at the minute, but i wondered if there was any simple things i could do to make it quieter.

I dont have any kinda special setup, just got an exhaust fan, an intake fan, and a cpu fan, there all standard fans for my system.

Any ideas anyone?

I just bought a 4'x4' square of dynamat (www.dynamat.com). now, it works good, but it adds lotsa weight to yer case, and if you wanna ever remove it...good luck. it does the job. I have a delta screamer, the high whine is gone, not it is just a tolerable (still loud) hum. i'd get other options though. i got the dynamat to use in my car too. it certainly isn't the best method, but a good one, in my opinion/situation.

Yeah, i think my friend has some spare from his car, so i might ask if i can try it out.

Does it do anything to temps?

Larger case fans often move as much if not more air at a slower RPM, thus they are quieter. I replaced by front 80mm fan with a quieter 92mm fan which reduced noise levels slightly on my machine. The CFM rating was higher on my new 92mm fan too.

What is more important? an intake fan or exhaust fan? cos i might try seeing what my temps are without one or the other.

I havent got any cash at the moment :D

More pressure in the box together with heat is apperently a bad thing - so u need more exhaust than intake!!

Ok, thanks, i will try disconnecting the intake fan and see if that helps :)

I wouldnt disconnect the intake fan! - I would just make sure that the CFM intake is lower than the CFM exhaust!

Put a carbon prefilter over the fan. It totally dampened the high-pitched whining noise.

ya know the egg crate people put on their beds
that stuff works wonders

You can isolate the fans from the case walls with rubber washers or pieces of mouse pad, this reduces noise from vibration.

You can also run your case fans on 7volts instead of 12volts. This makes them run slower and quieter, but you have to monitor your temps because you may or may not get the same cooling.

How to get 7V:

As with any mod, you do at your own risk!

On the line from the power supply there are 4 wires, a red(5V), 2 black grounds and a yellow(12V). On the cord for the fan there are 2 wires, a black ground and a red wire that matches up with the yellow 12V wire from the power supply. What needs to happen is the black ground wire needs to be moved so it matches up with the red 5V wire. I recommend moving the pin in the molex connector using a pin extractor tool. They are $8 from Jameco.com or I think Radio Shack has them. You can also splice the wire, but moving the pin is neater.
