I upgraded from my old western digital 40gig 7200rpm pata drive to this new Western digital 250gig 7200rpm 16meg sataII. The first drive was making weird whistling noise so I rmad it and got it replaced. With my old 40gig drive, in the same exact system specs, my system was smooth and fast. I was able to burn dvds, watch tv, use firefox, anything else. With this new drive, its really slow, I cant even turn on firefox when burning a dvd now. But its only when burning dvds, even when extracting files, or watching tv and doing something else.
Thanks

What motherboard/chipset are you using? What mode is your SATA controller in? Have you installed drivers?

First download the latest chipset INFs: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/T8Clearance.aspx?url=/9589/a08/infinst_autol.exe&agr=N&ProductID=1049&DwnldID=9589&lang=eng

In BIOS under IDE Configuration is the IDE set to "Enhanced Mode"? Enhanced mode support on "SATA"? Configure SATA as RAID "No"?

Again in BIOS is your drive listed under Third of Fourth IDE Master? If you click on it does it show if it is working in Ultra DMA mode?

Next in Windows go into the device manager, and look under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers". It should list a bunch of channels. Alternate click on each one in turn, select "Properties", and make sure that under the "Advanced Settings" tab all your transfer modes are set to "DMA if available". Everything connected should ideally be in some sort of DMA mode (your hard drive should be listed as "Ultra DMA Mode 5") as listed under "Current Transfer Mode".

If that doesn't work then try the intel disk controller drivers. They may not allow you to install unless you're in RAID (or AHCI) mode, but you can try: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1049&DwnldID=9029&strOSs=All&OSFullName=All Operating Systems&lang=eng

Yes, it is in dma mode, set to Enhanced Mode"? Enhanced mode support on "SATA"? . I tried everything, enabling 32bit path also. I installed the intel inf, they seem rather small less then 1meg. I did a chkdsk, and also degrament the drive. Is there any way that the 16meg cache on the drive may disactivated. cuz even my western digital 160gig 7200rpm pata are really fast.
Thanks
