i rember back in the day there were USB backpacks that connected to hd44780 character LCDs but now i cant find any thing...i have been out of this type of thing for a while but i wouldnt have thought this type of thing would have gone. it was way cheaper to get the 2 and wire them together your self then it was to buy a matrix or a crystal fontz display. i am sure it still will be.
any one know where to get suchs a thing any more?
and also on the topic of LCD i found this...dont know if any one knows any thing about it buy assuies should be glad:

no i go to www.eio.com to get my character LCDs, i dont like e-bay for this type of thing (or any thing else)...it is possible to hook it up to a printer and a serial port but as you said its kinda bulky, and for what i am going to do with it i needs to be USB....i am thinking i am gonna have to make my own out of some other adaptor.
i am ordering a bunch of parts today so i have something to do when i'll be intetrnet less for about a week...i usually play UT2004 alot but i wont be doing that for a while it seems

its going to be kinda hard to find a way to wire up parallel to a serial cable, they do have parallel to serial converter boards...

thats probably the best place to get an idea from...you almost need to grab a serial lcd panel, that would work out alot easier, they do have parallel to serial converter boards somewhere on this site, cant seem to find em tho. i know they were there a while ago.

your supposed to run it in 4 bit mode to get a serial connector to work how ever i thought instead of making it complicated i am just going to try it with a paraelle to USB converter, i know thats been done but usually the hardest part is the software.
edit:
something like this (http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/1128968919701650/9/nc/ee/3668/Syba%20SY-USB-P%20USB%201%2E1%20to%20Parallel%20Port%20Adapter%2 0)
i had a feeling i was gonna make my own so i shoulda just done and ordered this and it would get here the same time everything else should
