Hey guys, here's the problem:
I picked up an Athlon XP 1800+ today, and flashed my Iwill KK266 bios to the latest one (dated 10/22/01, which gives XP support). I went ahead and installed the new CPU, reset the CMOS, and everything booted up fine and it recognized and labeled the CPU as "AMD Athlon XP 1800+."
At this point, all BIOS settings are at conservative settings, and the temp according to the monitor in the BIOS is very low.
But when it goes to boot up either Win98 or WinXP...it freezes. I can reboot, but the same thing will happen over and over again. I just put my regular Tbird back in and everything works fine...
Any ideas??
update: I tried both the 6/22 and 10/22 BIOSes...same deal.
Would I have to reinstall the OS?
I haven't got one yet but I suggest if you have a second hard drive big enough to hold an installation of your os that you put that in the machine and install from scratch, that way you won't lose what you've already got if the new installation doesn't solve your problem.
Btw welcome aboard. :)
heck I didn't know that a new bios is out. I might suggest you take a look at the iwill FAQ here (http://www.x-faqtor.com/KK266.htm)
link to kk266r bios oct 22 RAID MOBO ONLY (http://support.iwill.net/download.asp?path=bios&file=kkr1022.exe)

Welcome to the forums.
I was going to send you to amd.com but I see you have already posted over there. I'll keep my eye's open and let you know if I see anyone with the same problem that has solved it.
Seems more like a problem with the bios then the chip though.
Good Luck.
I just got my XP1700 yesterday and I went through the same problem. I was in a little more of bunch than you were because I fried my last cpu and this was the replacement! The way I got it up was when I remembered hereing in several reviews about the voltage difference in the new xp chip. So I lowered my voltage to 1.45v and I can get into win xp and surf the net a little. I still think that WinXP is having a couple of issues though! I hope this helps a little......

There are additional features in the XP that you have to reinstall Windows for...SSE for sure and I think that the prefetching isn't enabled either. That *might* be your problem...but you probably want to do that anyway so that you can get the full benefits of your new CPU. :)
I to am having problems with KK266r and 1800xp lockup city.
Anyone found a fix?
I bet the ACPI is screwing stuff up! my 2cents.

The XP has pre-fetch and SSE support. If your OS was installed wil a Tbird, which does not support these, you will probably run into problems, since Windows install can detect SSE support and the support was not installed for the TBird. You need to reinstall windows.
I did a reinstall but did not reformat first. Thought winme might pickup the difference but it did not help.
