Guys and gals......

Coming to a mobo near me soon..........

What the smeg do I get?

XP1500 or a 1.33GHz with a 266MHz FSB?

Either is an option, the XP on an Epox board, the 1.33 on an Abit........

What crunches faster?

Could someone tell me what a good AMD mobo is for crunching. I only have 100 for the mobo and processer. I am new to AMD, but I plan to buy it off ebay. I am currently working on a 1.4GHz system that is using an Iwill KA-266. I want DDR because I know it will improve overall performance. I will most likely be using an AMD Duron 800-950MHz or maybe a new MP Morgan core one. I will be replacing it once I get enough money...seeing how I don't have a job here at college it will be hard. I am skimming money off what my dad gives me now. BTW...I am not free loading, it is a deal that I worked out. I have to take 18 credit hours and maintain a 3.5 or higher.

I like the Epox 8K7A, but if you're on a $100 budget I believe ECS makes a pretty economical board. I don't remember the model #.

Hey is an Asus pretty good? I am looking for a mobo that has a north and south bridge right? Ah...new technology...I am outdated.

Just about all motherboards made right now use a north and south bridge. In my opinion the best AMD motherboards use the AMD 761 chipset - at least for the northbridge. I think most of them are using a Via 686b for the south. Asus boards are usually very good, but I thought you were on a budget. I think the A7M266 was pretty good. They discontinued it in favor of the Ali chipset which has posted slightly better memory scores, but they've always been a cheap company and I wouldn't trust them for reliability.

Okay one last question for you TC. What do you think about the FICA AZ-31 as the mobo for my seti cruncher?

Don't know a thing about it - sorry.

I haven't heard of a AZ-31 mobo - but FIC in general has been an average motherboard. Have used several older Pentium II and Pentium III slot motherboards, and they were O.K. performers. ABIT and Epox have higher performance mobo's.

in response to TC actually not knowing something
its the ECS K7S5A
seems to be a healthy performer
and rock solid too
allows you to use either SD or DDR ram too

apparently not a good overclocker
but speedy enough as it is

havent heard much about the FIC
usually best to stay with big brands
or find some decent reviews

:)
