How much do you intend to pay for the 9800Pro ?

These are what i currently have, as a spare. My friend needs a new video card. I was not sure (typically dumb question) which video card out of the 2 that i have would be better to give to him. He currently has a 5700FX so i new that these would both be better than the one he had, just wasent sure which to give. Now I know.

Thanks :p

No problem .

The 6200 and 5700 are very comparable, it would be more of a side-grade for him, in all but the most shader intensive games. The FX wins in Half Life 2, matches it in UT2004 and Pacific Fighters, and takes a beating in Doom3.

But of course the FX would be running HL2 in DirectX 8 mode .

Even though the card support direct x8 you can still download x9.0c When I was running my Hercules 4500 ProphetII 64Mb card I still updated to DirectX 9.0 and had no problems.

The FX series is DX 9 though, so why would it be running it in DX8? Maybe HL2 runs the lower end cards in lower quality to boost framerate?

I've never used a 6200, but I'm guessing that a normal 6200 is like a normal 5200 and would be pretty bad. A quality 6200 would probably beat the 5700, but if it were a normal 5700 and a normal 6200, I'd say they're about the same.

But the 9800 Pro is better than all of them, hands down.

Valve put the entire FX series to run in DX8 mode because they are very poor when standard DX9 code is used . The entire FX line is just about unplayable using DX9 .

Yeah the FX line is an embarassment for nVidia. ATi was spanking them the whole time until the 6xxx series came out. I believe a 9600Pro would even be an upgrade from a 5700.

Does the 6200 support SMP3.0? That would be the only reason I would say the 6200 is better than a 9800Pro.

Does the 6200 support SMP3.0?

It surely does. Infact, its quite weird seeing as the 6200 is the bottom of the line of the series 6 cards, yet when it comes to the next 3dmark (06) anything less than an x800 wont be able to run it properly, yet a 6200 (which by any standards would get owned by that card) could, due to its SM3 support.
