This ONLY happens on my athlon machine; yesterday and today, at roughly the same time (although probably a coinsidence) F@H performed an illegal operation. I realize that im running win98 on that comp (possible explanation :D but probably not.. my other 98 box is folding 20/7 w/o problem) but this only happens after its been running for a while. Anybody experienced this before? I've already switched to the text version.. but im just worried it may be the athlon overheating, however windows deosnt freeze, just folding@home. Any theories?
BTW: the althon isnt o/ced... yet.

make sure you are getting credit on your text version console. sometime it doesnt work.

as far as the graphic client screwing up. im not supprized. the people at standford seem to be a bit retarded when it comes to programing and probably a few other things.

it could be that your graphics card didnt like the program or windows 98. did you make sure to turn off the screensaver.

screen savers often screw stuff up in windows 95/98. when you move the mouse on the puter after the monitor has been off for awhile you see a box at the bottom of the screen in the tray that says screen saver or its blank.

and yea i'm getting the f@h page fixed up so soon we can address all of the problems in the faq.

The graphical version caused me a lot of problems, but they were confined to a few systems, not all. Full screen mode was the part that I had the most trouble with. It froze my system and it needed a hard reboot. They blamed it on my graphics card which is a voodoo. Maybe that was it, maybe it wasn't but I think I'll find out soon enough since my screen now has a bluish tint which is a result of my graphics card flipping out.
The text version hasn't given me much trouble, except on my win2k laptop. It's OK, even there, but there is a problem when shutting it down and restarting it at times. Work gets lost or the core won't shut down correctly. I've been trying to shut down and restart the client occasionally to keep it running smooth and just try to time it so that it has just dl'd a new protein and won't lose much from being shut down, just in case.

I decided last night to run the graphical version as a service, in the tray. Worked fine until I walked away for a while and the screensaver kicked in. It locked up and required a full reboot. I've also experienced service startup failures that appear to be related to other tray-items starting at the same time. This may be related to Norton AV or Zone Alarm. A warm reboot generally fixes this issue. I decided to try the graphical version mainly due to losing WUs with the text client. Now I'm convinced that neither version is very stable.

I've heard that can shorten the life span for a monitor...so I just set mine on agressive sleep/shutdown. screensaver at 15 minutes monitor goes to sleep at 20 minutes. still consumes a small amount of power, but not much more than when I shutdown windows and it remains dormant awaiting the PC to be restarted. basically the only power used by mine is the little LEDs that race from left to right letting my know the power is working and it's ready for use.

If any of that made sense....

I found it's best for me if I disable the F@H screen saver and just let the monitor go to sleep. That way I'm not getting the lockups.

I have problems with emails coming into my msn inbox while the proggy is uploading to Stan and getting new work. The screen saver freezes and requires control+alt+delete and end FAH task then restart. That is the only problem I've seen so far.@@
