trying to set up printer sharing in win 98. The printer works fine from the computer it is connected to but when I try to print from another pc it just sits there. On the remote pc the printer que says it is printing, the printer isn't doing anything, on the pc the printer is connected to there is nothing in the prit que . Do I need a special printer or some other software? Both pc are running 98 and can see eack other on the network file sharing works fine, print sharing does not, I do have it enabled on both pc's.

Make sure you have the actual printer set to share on the network, make sure that the comp w/ the printer has 'File and Printer sharing for microsoft networks' installed, and that both comps have 'Client for microsoft networks' software installed. Thats bout all i can think of. I'm sharing a comp between 3 comps, 2 98s and 1 win2k w/o prob.

I have the printer shared and file and print sharing installed. I have it set up with micfosoft family instead of client for microsoft networks. Could that be the problem?

If you dont have client for microsoft networks and a valid network protocol such as ipx/spx installed you wont be able to print

I have netbui and client for microsoft networks installed, still doesn't work. The printer just sits there never even makes a sound

Do you have an IPX protocol installed?

I've never messed with netbeui and done little with ipx: tcp/ip however does quite well sharing printers over a network: I'd say use them- and if still no go THEN maybe I could help!

I uninstalled everything except tcp/ip and set up with file and print sharing again (which is how I had it set up to begin with) and it still doesn't work

What kind of printer?
Is it visible in network neighborhood?
You said it works fine on the loacal pc, right?
(Starting my shared printer troubleshooting "mode" now! If I ask something basic, don't be insulted please:) , its just the whole process I go through.)

Xerox home document centre (peice of junk)
I can see it from my other PC
and it does work as a local printer as well as it is going to anyway.

Which Os is the machine running that the printer is connected too?

Silly question but how are you installing the printer? are you double clicking it in Network Neighbour Hood?

to follow along with Red Hot Machine's post- if you haven't already tried it, double click on the printer in network neighborhood; you may be prompted for drivers and if it asks to replace old drivers say yes.

pc's are running what os?

Pc's are both running win98 and drivers have been installed on both machines.

did you add the drivers to the second pc with the "Add Printer" wizard or by double-clicking in Network Neighborhood?

If you didn't do it in network neighborhood, uninstall it and then try to re-install that way.

Network neighborhood is the only place I installed the drivers for the printer. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for it, still doesn't work.

Any Idea what that may be?
