View Full Version : blue orb on south??? ...northbridge???
I'm using an Iwill KD266 mobo with the ALi chipset. the north chip had a stock heatsink with no fan!:( ...i wanted to put a blue orb on the north chip but it couldn't fit. 3 other mobo components where blocking the way. what can I do?
so i put the blue orb on the south chip with that two sided tape stuff that comes with it. was that a bad move? is it safe to take it off or will i rip the chip off with the orb?

To make it fit, you can try filing down the sides. Just make sure there's some clearance between it and the other components. Be sure to wash it thouroughly afterwards as well. Putting it one the southbridge wasn't neccesary, but it definitely wouldn't cause any damage. Unless you have all the PCI slots filled up and constantly being used, the southbridge probably won't get all that warm.
The two sided tape thing was kinda bad, but that's just a generalization for all two sided tape, expect one which I think is no longer made. Anyways, you should be able to pull it off without fearing for your chipset. Your best bet would be to just buy a small fan for your stock NorthBridge heatsink if you decide not to file the orb

no point in cooling the south bridge. if you really want to cool the northbridge age a icile cooler which is copper 40x40mm and cools atherlons up to 1GHz

Unless its causing some instability of some sort, I personally wouldn't bother. If you already have a small greenie that you can use, it wouldn't hurt putting one on

we are bored so we decided to break that
actually he decided to since he saw it(i used that thing as a keychain on my pencil case)
In my opinion,
Take the greenie off the noth bridge and put
it on the south bridge.
Put a good chipset fan on the north bridge.
