Microsoft Confirms Windows XP Giveaway Is No Hoax

Auckland, New Zealand - Wednesday, October 24, 2001 - Microsoft New Zealand today confirmed that it will be giving away 500 copies of its new operating system, Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Upgrade, on October 25, the day the product is launched.

Microsoft New Zealand’s Windows Marketing Manager, Jay Templeton, said the phones have been running hot at Microsoft with people wanting to confirm whether or not the giveaways are genuine.

“We will be giving away 500 copies of Windows XP Professional Upgrade worth $599 each, at over 90 Noel Leeming (Big Bytes), Dick Smith and Harvey Norman retail stores across the country.”

Guess who got 3 of them :D

Man, these 4:30am starts are tough
I was first in line though (and the brother and the girl 2nd and 3rd)

The local PC store is going to sell the xtras for me :p

The local PC store is going to sell the xtras for me :p "Worth $599 each???" That isn't US dollars, is it? XP Pro full version is only $300 (or thereabouts) here (US). What "xtras" are you going to get?

I believe that he is refering to the fact that he has three boxes and is only keeps one for himself and the additional or extra boxes are being re-sold by the store

(however I could be wrong)

You were exactly right! But we've found homes for them all I think so won't sell the spare copies.

What do you mean US$??? I plastered "New Zealand" all the way through that post:rolleyes: So US centric. We only get 40 US cents for every kiwi dollar you know. :( The full version here costs $889.

It's a bit silly really, you could almost buy a car for that.

Cubase VST has been a bit buggy under WinME so I'm keen to try XP out.

Oh really? Nothing on the box says that. It's a full, normal, vacuum packed, unopened, update edition. No extra stickers or anything. The giveaways were not marked "for free distribution only." They come with no legal constraints concerning resale. I believe you are incorrect because you do not understand the situation. Which NZ law (fair trading act, consumer rights act, etc) are you refering to?

LOL
