Woah! i wasnt expecting this from a pci card! i just got a BFG GeForce FX 5500 OC 256mb PCI and im impressed. im running it in a dual 3.0 xeon, 2gb ddr2, 200ish GB hdd in raid 5, and audigy 2zs gamer. i ran HL2 at 1280x1024 at high settings, no AA. Plays very smooth, i like it better than my 9600.

but of course i want it to be better. i tried ocing it but it didnt seem to do anything. i only have stock and i havent had the time to fully find its true potential. i tried different drivers but i didnt see any improvements. anyone else have luck ocing it? would the PCI bus be a bottleneck?

THats good for a PCI card, Yes PCI would be a bottleneck, thats why it was replaced by AGP which is being replaced again by PCI Express.

It's probably running the game on DirectX8.1, hence the good performance.... The 9600 (pro & xt) would still spank the 5500.... especially on DX9.

But still what matters is that you are happy with it.... which version of the 9600 did you have?

Surprisingly it looks as good as my 9600. im pretty sure its running it at dx9... i had the 9600NP, it was a nice card but its on my media center, now i just need a HDTV card to replace that so the picture wont get cut at the edges...sigh. when benchmarked the 5500 did significantly worse than my 9600NP, 6000ish vs 9000ish but after i oced my 9600 i got 1100ish. Oh the day i dream when i get a comp with a PCI-e, but for now im stuck with the 5500, haha.

Take a look at the water, it will probably look different... I think HL2 was programed to run on DX 8.1 default with any FX series card. Just look on the graphic options (probably will appear DX hardware level- DX9, software level-DX 8.1 or something)...

Have you OCed your 5500 as of now? if so, post your clocks :)

Lol, yeah, you are running hl2 in dx 8.1 guaranteed. Not much difference except for the water though.

You might want to give Rivatuner a try as well.

i just got to some water parts in hl2 and wow...i was dissapointed. it loooks crappy, haha. i guess it is dx8, any mod to undo that? so i did try the nvidia overclocker, it froze and quit the game. im thinking heat problems? yesterday i was having problems with heat, it kept crasing (hardware failure) when it wasnt oced.

i was browsing over some mods and isnt rivatuner for flashing the chip?

speaking of chips, i just got a PNY verto 6600GT 128mb AGP8x to replace my 9600...hehe :) i hear they also have heat issues... any cheap ideas to help cool off the chips so i can oc? (besides buying a 50 hsf?) all my pci slots are used so im pretty sure the air flow isnt the best down there...crappy stock hsf....argh
