first off, i'm sort of new to computers.

I was wondering how hott my Amd t-bird 1gighz should be running, ever sense i got my computer it has overheated, i started playing with the case off but it got really dusty so now i just leave my windows open.. anyways, on hot days it still overheats, i went to bios and got the temperatures

mb temp: 109 f
cput temp: 146 f

are these high? or is bios wrong? ;( thanks loads :D

No, it's not super hot, but could be lower. Maybe you need to look into replacing your Heat Sink & Fan setup with something good. Another thing you could do is look on the net for a free- ware download called VCool or CPUCool. They will bring your processor temp down by about 10 degrees.

By looking at your motherboard temp, I would guess that you probably could use a case fan or two. A couple of 60mm fans should work. They are cheap. Make sure that you have one drawing in air from the front of your case & the other expeling air @ the rear.

Acutally for a 1gig that is running pretty hot. I assume that is your idle temperature at 146F or 63C. In which case you will be running hotter when you're playing a game.

I agree with NAC that you may want to get some airflow inside your case. That can make quite a difference. Also, what kinda heatsink/fan do you have on the cpu? A stock AMD hsf is probably borderline on a 1gig. You may want to go to a better hsf. There are some very good ones for decent prices out there (like the glaciator).

I don't use the cpu cooling programs, but i don't know how much they would help while playing cpu intensive games. These programs work by putting the cpu into a sleep state during idle cycles, but I can't imagine that there would be too many idle cycles during some games.

Hey Azhari,
Is that a Texas sunrise on your avatar?
Your right about the vcool,etc.. But it helps for normal operations, like surfing . You know that even when I run Bench Marks, it stays lower than without the cpuidle. So far, I have encountered no ill effects with it. Even when I run Diablo Xp - as soon as I exit the game & look at my temp - it's never over 120F. AND I'M O/C'd

Its the afghan sunrise care of my colleagues (check my bio to make sense) :D

Since software cooling is one of the cheapest (FREE) methods of cooling I think its great. And I'm impressed if it can still lower temps during Diablo. COOL (pun intended)

How do you know what's a good temp and not?

I can't find my proccessory user's guide.

I'm running AMD Athlon 900mhz at 930mhz right now and peak temp is 118F.

I'd really appreciate a table or list of "safe" temperature ranges.

Thanks.

Also I'm using MBM 5 to check my settings (I'm cheapo and haven't bought a temp guage yet). Anyone know if Soyo gets their Bios temps by calculating it from voltage passed or if they actually placed some hardware around the motherboard to monitor temp? MBM5 shows 3 different sensors, just curious how accurate they are, I haven't experienced any problems yet.

Athlon 900 @ 930 on factory HSF
80mm front intake PS exhaust
256 PC133
Soyo K7VTA

There is a difference between safe temperature and comfortable temperature. I know I saw a list of safe temperatures somewhere here, but I'm sure AMD's site would have them too. But think about it this way, these safe operating temps are high enough that your CPU's performance will be lower, and you won't be able to OC.

A comfortable temp is where you can just sit back and not keep an eye on that temp monitor ;) From reading hundreds of posts from others here, I know that my temps are comfortable for my cpu and clock, AND that I have some room to OC when I get time to do it.

From what I remember, you don't want temps here than 55C (131F), and that is not a comfort temp either.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for the Info.

and for being patient with my newbie style questions :)
