I want to connect 2 comps in my house togeather to play multiplayer games. I was wondering what I have to do, I don't want to share internet connections or anything special, just hook the two comps togeather through the eithernet cards to game.
Thanks a lot

You can get another NIC (network interface card) and plug it into one of the computers. so you will have:
computer 1 : 2 nics (one connects to the second computer, the other one to the Internet if you have DSL or Cable, if no DSL or Cable, then you only need 1 nic.)
computer 2: 1 nic (connecting to the first computer)
Then you'll need a Crossover cable to connect the two computers together. A regular Patch cable will not work.
Then do a simple software configuration, and enjoy a 1-10ms multiplayer ping!
If you need further instructions, just ask! :)

ok I got the 2 systems connected with a cross over cable. But I don't know much about networking and I don't know how to configure them. Can ya help me out with setting up the systems?.
Thanks a lot.

ok. So make the configuration as follows:
Right click on My Network Places or Network Neighborhood, and click on Properties. If you don't already have the following protocols, add them. You need TCP/IP, IPX, File and Printer Sharing.
Then select TCP/IP and click on Properties. Fill in the following info.
Computer 1
(Specify an IP Address)
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Now go over to the second computer, and do the same, but fill in the following settings:
Computer 2
(Specify an IP Address)
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Click OK, and restart. Now to check if you got the stuff correct, open MS-DOS from Computer #1 and type in ping 192.168.0.2
(with the second computer running). If you get ping, then you're connected. Now go to My Computer and right-click on a drive that you want to share. Select "Sharing" tab and fill in the settings. (that is if you want to be able to access the drive from the other computer)
If it doesn't work, then make sure the lights on the nics go on. If they don't then its a nic or cable issue. If they do, then make sure the two computers have the same Subnet Mask. If the configuration is correct and everything but no go, tell me, I'll think of something ;)
Good Luck! :)

one word ... "CrossOver cable" 1 nic in each pc

192.168.x.x is sooo popular because it is a private network ip. so you have you internet connection coming in witha different ip then your gateway/router will send the packet to you from there creating less need for you to have a non private ip. 192.168 is also the default for microsoft internet conection sharing.

Can this also work through a hub as well? I mean as far as setting up the IP address? I am asking because I use a DSL connection with one of my computers and that has a static IP. So in my case I would need to manually make the IP and subnet mask for the other computer only correct?
