I already own a LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.11b/g router and I need to send wireless signal to the house from a dorm in the back. Is it better for me to use 2 wrt54g routers in WDS mode or just buy a LINKSYS WUSB54GP IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter shown here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124153 . The wireless-b signal right now using the WRT54g + Wireless-B Linksys Booster with a laptop that has a wireless-b card right now is shown at LOW inside the house making the download speed about half the max. Haven't tested with a wireless-g yet, thats why I want to see what you recomment. So again, is it better for me to use 2 wrt54g routers in WDS mode or just buy a LINKSYS WUSB54GP IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter for a desktop computer that will be inside the house. I would probably save money buying the second router. Also know that I have the SVEASOFT modified firmware which I can increase the antenna signal.

I suppose you could use enhanced firmware and boots the power between two units.

You could also buy an external pannel antenna and connect that to the wrt54g, one per each unit, and tell it to use the antenna that its connected to instead of using diversity mode. Point the pannels at each other and you should be fine. Check out maxrad.com for antennas under the WISP section for some relatively cheap units from Maxrad. A unit with 9db of gain is only like $32. Of course it is connectorized for an N-connector so you will need to find a cable that has an RP-TNC connector on one end, and an N-male on the other end so you can connect it to the wrt54g. You will also need some coax sealant and 3m super 33 electrical tape as well to weather seal the outdoor connection from the cable to the antenna.

i recomend trying a parabolic reflector, like shown here... http://www.freeantennas.com/

specifically, http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html

i hav used them and they seem to make quite a difference, migh do the trick for ya, as opposed to spendin a bit oc change on commercial antennas as AMD phreak suggested. and if these reflectors work well, you could always upgrade to a better panel antenna and get an even better signal.

one thing to check.. the booster, is its channel set to the same as the AP? they're likely both on channel 6, which is the most cluttered channel in the spectrum. it'd be best to pt one on ch 11 and the other on 1, so they have the most seperation from each other, and will be less likely to interfere and hurt signal.

Does anyone know if the Alchemy firmware works with WRT54G version 5 router? I purchase it and well its the new version with that easy connect button on the front. Also can anyone point me in the right direction to setup WDS between two WRT54G routers?

sorry, i dunno about the firmware, i think it would be best to ask the maker of the firmware.
