About 18" away with my 2000FP 20.1" at 1600x1200. Any further, and the text is too small. Using the "Large Icons" and "Large Text" helps some.

Isn't that the truth, Sometimes when playing a FPS I get rediculously close to the point where my nose is almost touching the stupid screen.

12-18" if I'm drafting/designing, and 19-24" in I am just laid back surfin the web. I seems that the more intense the activity, the closer i get. I don't know why, I can see just as well at 12" as I can 36".

I sit roughly 20" away from my monitor when I game.

It shoots up to 30" when I browse the internet.

My trusty old CRT pumps out too much radiation for me to sit too close.

Max0r

I tend to be 20" to 2 feet or more away, but not as far as 3 feet (but I would if I coudl get away with it). I almost always configure a desk so the monitor is as far back as possible. I lean back and chill with it I don't lean all up close to the monitor... but sometimes I do come close. Though without my glasses I'd have to lean up to read certain things. I don't see why anyone would lean up for gaming. To truly kick ass you need to have a good overview of the entire screen, not tunnel vision =P

Got 2 monitors. Main system has a 24" Widescreen @ 1920/1200. I'd say im about 19-24 from it most of the time. Special cases im 31+ when I'm relaxing in my chair. Secondary monitor off to the left thats on another computer I say is typically 36+. Its a 17" 1280x1024.

My work computer, is a 19" @ 1280x1024. I'd also say 19-24 typically for this monitor also. Special cases im further but overall this is the distance.

Also I use windows default text size, and have no glasses or contacts either. Even though sometimes it feels like I should have them :(

Ha ha you should have seen me when I first put on my first pair of glasses. I never even realized there was anything wrong with my vision, then I put them on and it was like WHOAH... ok! Speaking of which these days driving without my glasses is a challenging activity that I partake in from time to time. And it scares the hell out of my passengers who are pleading with me to put them back on... MUHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

I've got a dell 24" 2405fpw and it sit waaaaay too close because my desk is only small (probably sit about a foot away). I kinda have to keep turning my head to look from one side of my desktop to the other :D. At least it's not a CRT... otherwise i'd probably be blind by now. I think it's worse for my neck than my eyes :).

I've done the same. I have to sit further back, because if I stare at the screen for long periods up close, my eyes start to strain.

When I actually start using my 2005FPW, I might have to sit further back than I do now.

Very interesting... I just got rid of that monitor last month for my LCD, and I remember "hide refresh rates that this monitor doesn't support" would get rid of 85hz @ 1280x1024... and that's with the monitor drivers installed. Did you force that refresh rate?

laptop is usually elbows length awy, whatever that is. desktop, usually 36 + as i pretty much only use it at home for movies and playing music. laptop display is a 14 inch display ona hp ze4610us, desktop is a 17 inch CRT, CTX branded, cheap. the old crt, i dont usually try bother reading at a res higher than 800 x 600. its dynamic focus modifier is off something bad. i managed to improve it a great bit, but tumbling down a flight of stairs isnt good for them. but hey, it still works and it was given to me for free (when i got it it was so out of focus a line of text would be a faint gray line across the screen) its a 17 inch gateway EV700.

12-18" for me on my 2005FPW (1680x1050). I've noticed that it's extremely important to be close to the monitor for FPS gaming. My wife's stepfather has the same monitor (2005FPW), but he has one of those desks that has a separate pedestal for the monitor, and it sits rather far back, probably at a distance of 25-30". When I play RTCW: ET on his system I am noticeably worse! It's not the hardware or controls, either, as framerates are stuck at 76 fps and the mouse and keyboard feel comfortable.
