Overclocking PIII600E/SY6VBA133 Soyo ?????????
Hi,
After years of building systems I finally am attempting to overclock my PIII 600 to get a little more life out of it. So I'm not experienced at overclocking. PIII 600E has been working great for 1.5 yrs at 600mhz.
Problem:
After attempting to overclock by raising FSB to 133 to achieve 800mhz, the video card locks up when either doing DirectX 8 AGP test or playing a intensive video game Operation Flashpoint.
System:
CPU: PIII 600E Slot One (SECC)2 Coppermine cA2
Standard cpu HSF 11-13cfm I think (common dual fan)
MB: Soyo SY-6VBA 133
Chipset Via Apollo Pro 133 (VT82C693)
Mem: 256m 100mhz (brand not sure)
Video Crd:GF2 Pro 64 (Gainward Golden sample)
Hard dr. 40gig 7200rpm IBM
SB Live
PwrSply: 250w UL
OS Windows 98se
Am running case open with exterior fan during this phase
avg case/mb temp after overclocking 80-85deg F
Mainboard settings
JP9 & JP7 pins both open to set FSB = 133
JP7 Open, JP2 (2-3) = Boot FSB 133 & AGP divider 2.0
BIOs Settings or changes
CPU Freq set to (133 x 6.0) 800mhz
Dram set to CPU FSB clock - PCI clock or 100mhz
APG 66mhz
Results:
Booted at 800mhz
checked temp in bios, CPU avg (95-120 f)mainly (110-115)
Windows boots fine, checked cpu with SandraPro, shows 802mhz at avg temp (95-110f) underload temp (110-115f).
I tried to raise the gainward video card settings through turbo software, but video became unstable. Returned video software settings to default or no turbo. Video still slightly unstable. So I raised CPU core voltage by +2.5%. Video was now stable, no scratchy screen.
At first everything appeared to work fine. I didn't test DirectX8 but just started playing Operation Flashpoint, both single player then Internet Multiplayer. Due to server I was playing on locking up had to reboot several times, and no problem. Then after about 1 to 2 hours of play video locked up in the game. Next tried single player video locked up everytime. Tried raising voltage of cpu but no effect.
I tried lowering CPU Freg to 733mhz (133x5.5) but booting always reported 800mhz and so did Sandra inside windows. So I thought I was doing something wrong and didn't continue.
I've researched the internet, and the average overclock for this cpu/motherboard config is 850mhz, this is even with 100mhz memory. So I believe I should be able to get 800mhz no problem, but have to change something with AGP card.
If anyone has exerience with this cpu/mb or is extremely knowledgeable about overclocking, I would appreciate some pointers.
Thanks in advance...
