So I have these beige cd drives that I want black to match the case, any way I could spray paint/paint them instead of paying extra money for black faceplates?

recommend some paints if so

Looked at the site, etc etc, didn't see any samples of it, anyone got any pics of it in action?

seems pretty cheap, $5 is nice :D

I'd recommend vinyl dye if you want a black-plastic look. Vinyl dye soaks into plastic, so that it pretty much looks as if it were black plastic.

You can pick up vinyl dye at pretty much any auto parts dealer (autozone, etc), it's used for painting car internal faceplates/dash stuff.

Vinyl dye info. (http://case-mods.linear1.org/case-mod-101-optical-drive-painting/)

If you want more exotic colors or finishes, you can use standard enamel paints, but I'd probably recommend plastic primer and maybe clear coats to protect.

Something like this?

I painted with Rust-o-leum Sunburst red (i believe that's what it's called, glossy finish: $3.69). I went over all the markings (8X/CD-RW) with Ultra-Fine sharpie.

That looks very nice and professional (excecpt the sharpie part, no offense). Just wondering, why is the picture called paintedbezels.jpg.jpg? :P

Yeah, the sharpie ruined it, plus i screwed up on the painting.

and the filename, no clue... i might have typed paintedbezels.jpg in the filename to save as in the GIMP, but then it adds another jpg

Er, I'm not a fan of that SHINY SHINY look lol, I'd rather just have the dull black look. However, I am a fan of the SHINY in silver (so it looks like metal). I'm assuming that the shiny krylon or rustoleum in silver will do the trick?

For a dull black, I paint with a normal black Duplicolor gloss. Then after a half hour, I come back and spray it again, but from 2-3 feet away so it's just overspray. It comes pretty darned close to the embossed/textured matte finish that black drives are done in.

Duplicolor makes a nice silver, but if you want metalflake silver (tiny tiny flakes) there's no equal to that metalcast silver base. It's the one that's supposed to have a tinted topcoat to duplicate annodizing, but my word it's purty all by itself. $5+ a can though, but it does go a long way. It self levels nicely to an even gloss finish.

With any paint sticking to plastic, prep work is KING. I disassemble the parts to be painted and clean them in the kitchen sink with a new scotchbrite and some ajax cleanser and the hottest water my tap can muster. Dry them off with coffee filters to prevent lint.

For a really nice "flat black" finish, go to Lowe's (or home depot) and get some spray paint designed for barbecue touch-up. I use this for under-the-hood mods on my pickup. It comes out a nice deep black, but not the least bit shiny.
