So it may look like one of those old 5¼ floppies... but appearances can be deceiving:

Up to 1.6-terabytes (or 1,600 1638-gigabytes for those who can’t count) and transfer rates reaching 120 MBPS (megabytes, not bits!), Maxell’s latest holographic technology is a real breakthrough in optical media.

More info here (http://www.maxell-usa.com/Content/Pages/Page.asp?Section=pressreleases&department=maxellusa_pr&Line=datapr&Open=datapr41):eek::eek:

Have you seen the epidsode of futurama where prf. farnsworth brings out his old 78 million RPM silent holographic record :D

First models don't come out until q4 2006, and they only have 300GB capacity and transfer rates of 20MBps. Hardly amazing considering that by that time HD-DVD and Bluray will hopefully be mainstream. And Blu-ray discs with 8 layers are in development that would give 200+gb capacity and hopefully by then 4x drives will be out with transfer rates at least 60MBps.

Still, when this technology gets refined, hopefully by mid-2007 we should have 500GB+ models with at least 80MBps rates.

Thats sweet once it matures.

I read somewhere (PCMag maybe) that eventually we may have holographic cards about the size of a credit card that could be 20 gigs or more. It's about time hard drives had breakthrough.

Wow that's amazing. I don't know what I'd do with a terabyte of storage though; that's a lot of space!

this is cool...i just wish something faster than harddrives would go mainstream (and be cheap).

if they put those man made diamond to computer use as they talked you could have a CRAP load of almost infinite storage in something the size of a diamond.

Makes me wonder but I'm looking forward to these also besides the Blu-Ray format which I can't wait for that to hit computers since I see that as being more of an option currently.

My stack of newly bought DVD-Rs seem about as useful as a bunch of floppies now.

This isn't all that new, but its been in development for quite some time... Last year a working prototype was showcased though.

I recently did a presentation on the future of data storage technology for a small systems class with only semi-technical college Info Systems students, and I have included an excerpt from that which pertained to Holographic storage. It explains what Holographic storage is, It contains a nice diagram which helps to understand how this works, and it highlights some pros and cons about the technology... Its only three slides of compressed info so you can find out a lot more from this than you will from most any article you can find...

If someone would offer me some hosting, I will link you guys to it.

sorry, I thought there was some arguement over how big the disks actually are going to be right off the bat and I saw that and figured it was good confirmation.
